What Happened On Saturday Across The National League?

By Sam Elliott

Chesterfield did something they’ve not managed for almost 15 years and they were helped even more as the battle of the two form teams ended all square.

Paul Cook’s leaders have a five-point National League advantage after edging out Wealdstone 3-2. Tom Whelan, Michael Jacobs and Liam Mandeville earned the points - the first time the club have won since in a row since 2009.

It was a great day for them as many of the side just behind slipped up. Barnet’s perfect home record is over after a 0-0 draw against FC Halifax Town.

Kade Craig earned Solihull Moors a 1-1 draw with Bromley, who couldn’t quite make it six wins in a row.

The result of the day was at Altrincham, who put half a dozen past Ebbsfleet United. Lewis Baines and Chris Conn-Clarke both scored twice.

Oldham Athletic are now in the groove and they notched a second victory since David Unsworth departed by thrashing Oxford City 4-0 to end the visitors’ seven game undefeated run. Brennan Dickenson got two.

There was 98th minute TNT Sports drama as York City stunned Woking to hand Neal Ardley another win, Ryan Fallowfield lashed home very late on to make the early and long trip worthwhile.

That was nothing compared to what would go on a few miles down the road. Ian Henderson’s 95th minute winner left Rochdale fans thrilled after leaving Dorking with all three points - they were 1-0 down with a minute of regular time to go.

AFC Fylde’s stay at the bottom of the table was a short one - a 2-1 win at Southend United hauled the home side back to the foot.

Hartlepool United are back on track after a Sam Ling own goal did for Dagenham & Redbridge.
Haj Mnoga got what turned out to be the decisive goals as Aldershot Town won 2-1 at Boreham Wood.

Marcus Dinanga scored two more as Gateshead defeated Maidenhead 3-0 as Kidderminster’s poor run continues after Paul McCallum’s double helped Eastleigh to a 2-1 win.

Managerless Spennymoor Town started life without Jamie Chandler with an accomplished performance as they won 2-0 in the National League North at Buxton. Rob Ramshaw and Will Harris got the goals.

The battle of two clubs with new managers ended 1-1 - Will Hatfield earned a point for Josh Gowling’s Darlington at home to Gloucester, who saw the return of Mike Cook last week.

Tamworth remain top after a plucky 0-0 draw at in-form Southport.

South Shields are breathing down their necks after leaving Peterborough Sports with a 4-2 win. Justin Johnson earned Chorley a point at home to Scunthrope United.

Sam Mantom bagged a hat-trick as Rushall Olympic won 4-2 against Scarborough Athletic. Marton Woods’ penalty won it for Boston United against ten man Chester.

It was also a winning weekend for Hereford, Banbury, Alfreton Town and Curzon Ashton, who did what few teams do and win at Brackley Town.

Bath City held onto the National League South leadership despite only picking up a point at home to Dover Athletic.

But Jerry Gill will be very happy with the 2-2 draw after being two goals down after an hour.

Yeovil Town are second after ending the game at Hampton & RB 2-1 winners - and with nine men. Rhys Murphy was at his poaching best as they eased to the points despite the late fright.

Torquay United were stunned at Hemel Hempstead, who keep on surprising people. They turned it around late on as Bayley Brown made it 3-2 to the Tudors.

When Worthing do come unstuck, they really unravel - they lost 4-0 at Maidstone United weeks after losing by the same scoreline at Braintree.

Shaun Jeffers was back on the scoresheet as he hit a pair for St Albans City at Chelmsford. Dartford got an important win as Paul Rooney’s goal was enough to defeat Tonbridge Angels.

There were frustrating home draws for high flying Aveley and Taunton and Keiran Thomas hit Weston-super-Mare’s winner at Truro City.
