The Ice Isn't Nice But Surviving Games Were All Red Hot!

By Sam Elliott

There was less football than we all hoped for across the divisions but goal explosion made up for the lack of games.

In the two National League matches that beat the big freeze, the net burst nine times.

That included a fightback and a last minute winner as Wrexham moved level on points with leaders Notts County.

It was heroic by Maidstone United who battled back from 2-0 down to level through a brilliant Jack Barham brace.

But the last word went to Aaron Hayden who keeps on scoring from centre-back and he timed his late, late winner perfectly to dig Phil Parkinson’s team out of a hole.

It was equally as entertaining in the other game at Bromley, where Michael Cheek celebrated his new deal with a double against Aldershot Town.

He twice drew his team level, first after Jake Hutchinson had the Shots in front.

Billy Bingham’s own goal made it 2-1 on the 70th minute but soon after Cheek pounced to make it 2-2.

AFC Fylde sit proudly on top of the National League North for the first time.

They came from behind to do what just two teams have done in the past 18 months - win at Scarborough Athletic.

Mo Faal’s winning goal means the Coasters are victorious for a fifth time in five games and they take over at the top as all their rivals were forced to put their feet up.

Brave ten man Blyth Spartans came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Gloucester City, Issac Walker pinched a great point that could mean so much come April.

Kane Thompson-Sommers’ penalty was enough for Hereford to win at Buxton.

Amari Morgan-Smith earned Kidderminster Harriers a point at home to Bradford PA as both teams had to settle for a draw.

All the stand-out title chasers were iced off in the National League South but Chelmsford City kept their flame flickering.

Simeon Jackson’s 89th minute winner broke Weymouth hearts as they move to within ten points of leaders Ebbsfleet United.

There was a thriller at Slough Town who held off Dulwich Hamlet to secure a vital 4-3 win for manager Scott Davies.

Eastbourne Borough beat Hungerford Town 3-1, goals from Charlie Walker, James Hammond and Leone Gravata did the damage.

A fine double from Zac McEachran helped Oxford City to a 2-1 win at Concord Rangers, who couldn’t be inspired by a Nathan Smith strike.

Braintree Town close the gap on the play-offs and a 94th minute Baris Altintop goal had the Iron fans heading home happy.
