No Luck In The FA Cup As Holders Halifax Exit The FA Trophy

By Sam Elliott

All three National League clubs were felled in the FA Cup as the league and FA Trophy action provided plenty of talking points.

It was game over from a very early stage for Barnet as Newport County showed their EFL class to cruise to victory at the Hive.

The visitors were 3-0 ahead inside 25 minutes before Harry Pritchard pulled one back. Seb Palmer-Houlden ended any hope of a fight back with a quarter of an hour to go.

Scarborough Athletic started in style against Forest Green Rovers when Ryan Qualter headed them ahead but the League Two side bit back, eventually going through 4-2.

Luck was out for Alfreton Town too. Walsall won 1-0 at the third attempt, Jamille Matt scoring the all important goal six minutes in.

It was a big night in the National League North, Mark Ellis’ winner swung things in Chorley’s favour in a 3-2 thriller against Buxton.

George Waring’s 26th minute goal for Curzon Ashton look to have taken all three points home from Farsley Celtic but Michael Coulson had other ideas.

He scored a 98th minute winner after Chris Atkinson made it 1-1 moments before in a breathless encounter.

Ken Charles and Adi Yussuf put Banbury United in command at King’s Lynn Town and they held on to take a valuable win against their relegation rivals.

In the other big game at the bottom, Gloucester City grabbed a potentially huge three points against Peterborough Sports as Danny Wright’s winner proved the difference.

Gateshead eased to FA Trophy progress at Rochdale, Connor McBride, Billy Chadwick and Callum Whelan scored before Marcus Dinanga’s late double. The excellent Heed left 5-1 winners.

Rhys Browne’s first half double seemed to have Woking in cruise control at Weston-super-Mare but a stunning fightback inspired by Dayle Grubb means the Cards painful season continues.

Meanwhile holders FC Halifax Town are out - Altrincham sent them packing 6-5 on penalties after the tie ended 0-0.
