What Happened Across The National League On Saturday?

By Sam Elliott

It wasn’t just headlines being written in the FA Cup on Saturday - the National League programme had plenty of unexpected twists and turns as well.

There were games in all three divisions, but who made the most of the reduced fixture list to levitate up the table?

Notts County couldn’t take advantage of their return to action after an enforced break.

Aldershot took the points through Harry Panayiotou, meaning it is back-to-back defeats for Neal Ardley as the Shots soared to 13th.

It also finished 1-0 at Wealdstone, who have now won four matches back-to-back.

Dean Brennan’s team are up to third, level on points with second-place Stockport County, after the edged out Altrincham.

Moses Emmanuel’s 66th minute goal was enough to keep the National League South champions above some very big boys in the table.

Gloucester City are back on top of the National League North, but their winning start is over.

They took a point home from Spennymoor but it was late heartache when Glen Taylor - who has scored in every game - struck home a penalty.

The Tigers thought they had the points when Matt McClure levelled and Akwasi Asante put the visitors ahead. Both remain unbeaten.

Blyth Spartans got their first victory of the season, a 3-0 success at Curzon Ashton - Paul Blackett was at the double.

Farsley left it late to grab victory over Gateshead, Jordan Richards’ winner is a real boost to boss Adam Lakeland.

Things have certainly changed for Bradford Park Avenue this season. After a disastrous campaign last time out, they are now looking up.

Avenue now have seven points from a possible nine after a 2-0 win over Alfreton.

Second-half goals from Jake Hibbs and Nicky Clee did the job for Mark Bower who said after the game: “That was a really good win.”

Leamington took a point back from Kidderminster, while ten-man AFC Telford held on to draw 1-1 with Southport.

Incredibly, Hungerford Town take back the National League South leadership - a fifth win from six games came at Braintree Town, who have lost all their games.

Maidstone United bagged what they call a big, big win. Last minute glory at Slough Town, securing a 3-2 win at Arbour Park, was sealed by George Porter.

You couldn’t move for early season big match thrillers on Saturday.

High-flying Dartford and Dorking clashed at Princes Park and it ended 3-2 to the Surrey side after Jason Prior’s double was added to by Matt Briggs.

Chelmsford City stormed to a 4-0 win at Welling United. Anthony Church scored twice and there were goals for Adam Liddle and Alex Teniola.

Hemel Hempstead came from behind to win 2-1 at Bath City - the Romans fourth defeat from five.
