Tuesday's Round-Up: Vanarama National League South

By Steve Whitney

Hemel Hempstead Town dropped two home points in their quest for a top seven spot in the Vanarama National League South, giving visiting Bath City an outside chance of making the play-offs themselves.

In a fairly even game at Vauxhall Road, it was Bath who took a 14th minute lead from virtually their first attack when a ball in found Sean Rigg to beat Laurie Walker.

But the Romans lead lasted barely 6 minutes as Sanchez Watt equalised when he toe-poked the ball home after being put through.

The second half saw chances for both sides, without either managing to break the shackles – and the outcome sees Hemel two points above a now eighth-placed Braintree Town side and Bath in tenth, five points behind the Tudors and Welling United.

Braintree moved up to within two points of the play-off places after winning 2-1 at the Woodspring Stadium, making it enjoyable 400-mile midweek round trip.

The final outcome was a little harsh on the Seagulls, however, who more than held their own and indeed broke the deadlock just past the hour-mark when Gethyn Hill slotted the ball past Nathan McDonald.

But the Iron equalised in the 81st minute when Roman Michael-Percil layed the ball off to Luke Allen to fire past Luke Purnell.

And 4 minutes later, Braintree snatched all three points when Ben Wyatt`s shot took a deflection to beat Purnell.

Tuesday`s other game saw Concord Rangers` relegation fears increase with a damaging 4-1 home defeat to East Thurrock United.

The Rocks took the lead after 9 minutes direct from a Max Cornhill corner.

It was 2-0 after 25 minutes when the Beachboys failed to deal with another corner and Ryan Scott fired home from close range.

The visitors virtually made the points safe 9 minutes into the second half when a long ball forward fell to Lewis Smith to net.

And top scorer Sam Higgins made it 4-0 just 3 minutes later.

The hosts reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute when Khale Da Costa was brought down and Femi Akinwande scored from the spot.
