Tuesday`s Pre-Season Friendly Review

By Steve Whitney

A handful of clubs in the Vanarama National League enjoyed an early pre-season friendly run-out on Tuesday night.

National League club Torquay United were early pre-season starters by taking on South West Peninsula League neighbours Newton Abbot Spurs and running out narrow 3-2 winners.

Newton Abbot took a shock 4th minute lead through Chisholm and it took the Gulls 35 more minutes to level through James Gray.

Mike Fondop put Torquay ahead after 73 minutes, only for Liam Moseley to level matters on 81 minutes.

But Fondop`s second less than a minute later earned Kevin Nicholson`s men a hard-earned win.

National League South Chelmsford City began their pre-season campaign with a comfortable 7-0 victory at Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division Saffron Walden Town.

The Clarets got the game rolling straight away, limiting their hosts to a handful of chances of before taking the lead on three minutes. Michael Spillane rose highest in a crowded box to power a header past Neil O'Sullivan.

Five minutes later City had their second goal as Kudos Oyenuga knocked the ball past O'Sullivan after Michael West excellently won the ball from Perry Moody on the edge-of-the-box.

The Clarets had to wait slightly longer for their third goal but it eventually came just before the half-hour mark, with Oyenuga grabbing his second by heading home a right-wing cross from Luke Daley.

A much-changed City side began the second half, but the second set of Chelmsford players started just as quickly as in the first half as Kane Haysman put the Clarets four ahead.

Eleven minutes later and City had their fifth. Chris Dickson was hauled down in the area and whistler Ryan Smith awarded the Clarets a penalty. Lee Barnard stepped up and calmly sent the Bloods' 'keeper the wrong way.

Jim Stevenson provided the Clarets' sixth as he tapped home from close range after a superb driven run from defender Chris Bush, before Dickson finally got the goal he had been so desperately trying to get - scoring City's seventh as he headed home a West cross.

A Wealdstone squad mainly made up of triallists travelled to Cherry Red Records Combined Counties Leaguers.

The National League South side won 2-1.

The Stones` league rivals Hungerford Town won by the same scoreline at Uhlsport Hellenic League side Bracknell Town.

Nick Bignall and Luke Hopper were the Crusaders` marksmen.

One of many new Gainsborough Trinity signings, former Lincoln City striker Alex Simmons, scored the only goal of the game for the National League North outfit at Toolstation Northern Counties East hosts Winterton Rangers.

Trinity`s league rivals Chorley were 3-1 winners at West Lancs Leaguers Euxton Villa.

Goals from Jason Walker, Josh Wilson and an un-named triallist scored the goals from Matt Jansen`s side.
