Team Of New Year's Day: The Vanarama National League

By Sam Elliott

We welcomed in 2018 in style yesterday - and it’s time to reward the players who got the New Year off and running.

As Macclesfield kept their six point lead in tact with a 4-1 win at FC Halifax, there were plenty more notable results around the National League.

Like AFC Fylde, who thrashed in-form Tranmere 5-2 - and Aldershot, whose late win over bitter rivals Woking completed the double their fans demanded.

The players who shone all star in our Team of New Year’s Day.

We’ve selected the 16 who were the headline makers after speaking with clubs and reporters at the ground.

As always, there’s plenty to talk about so enter the debate on twitter and make sure you are following @TheNationalLge

Goalkeeper: Dean Brill (Leyton Orient)
Lived up to his name as Orient secured a much-needed clean sheet in their goalless East London derby match with Dagenham.

Defence: Keith Watson (Hartlepool United)
Returning to the fold back back with two goals - could be help turn Pools’ season around?

Defence: Jordan Tunnicliffe (AFC Fylde)
The result of 2018 so far! Tunnicliffe got on the scoresheet and kept Tranmere in check in the sensational 5-2 victory. A great display.

Defence: George Pilkington (Macclesfield)
A trip to FC Halifax was supposed to be tricky but Macc held firm and walked it 4-1. Pilkington was in no mood to let points go begging at the Shay.

Defence: Jack Holland (Bromley)
Another goal for Bromley’s utility man and another nod for the National League’s team of the day. It’s been a great few days for him and his club.

Defence: Femi Ilesanmi (Dover Athletic)
Will be wondering how Dover didn’t beat Maidstone but the defender should have been on the winning team. Opened the scoring.

Midfield: Mitch Hancox (Macclesfield)
A hat-trick sees him walk into the team. FC Halifax had no answer - Hancox was out of this world and has the match ball as evidence.

Midfield: Lewis Montrose (AFC Fylde)

Fylde’s man of the match against Tranmere, and a performance which leads you to think 2018 could be as good as 2017 for Montrose and the Coasters.

Midfield: Dan Jones (Barrow)
A man for all positions, the left-back played wide left - and scored a crucial goal at Wrexham in the 3-3 draw when he was switched to right midfield.

Striker: Scott Rendell (Aldershot)
No doubt about this one, not that Woking fans will want to read it. Their former striker was back at Kingfield with a bang. Nothing beats a last gasp winner.

Striker: Oladapo Afolayan (Solihull Moors)

Can the Moors really pull off the great escape? Well it’s back to back wins now as Mark Yates gets his team into the groove. Two-goal Afolayan was outstanding.

Substitutes:
Sam Ling (Dagenham)
Will Evans (Aldershot)
Darren Carter (Solihull Moors)
Angelo Balanta (Boreham Wood)
Louis Dennis (Bromley)
