Magical McCarthy To Be Honoured Tomorrow

It will be an emotional afternoon at Ebbsfleet United tomorrow where the club say goodbye to former captain Paul McCarthy, who died tragically earlier in the year.

Fleet will honour their former defender with a game against Tottenham Hotspur at Stonebridge Road.

United’s 2008 FA Trophy winning skipper collapsed and died at his family home following an heart attack last February . He was just 45 and is sorely missed.

The Vanarama National league club will donate all proceeds from the game to their former assistant manager’s family.

Vice chairman Peter Varney described McCarthy as an “inspiration” while manager Daryl McMahon called him “a fantastic player and coach”.

His former manager Liam Daish paid a personal tribute on the week after his death.

His friend said: “He was a family man. He loved his wife Kath and his four daughters incredibly. He’d be up on Sunday mornings driving the girls to cricket or to rugby, and he would be excited about it too.

“He was an inspiration to young players. He showed them how a professional football should act. There aren’t enough Paul McCarthys out there anymore.

“People this week have asked me about the player, but the man is what’s most important. He was intelligent, articulate and he could hold his beer too!”
