Five Things You May Have Missed In The National League

By Steven Coney

We’re into the final stretch now in the Vanarama National League and that means that every single point is crucial.

More or less every team across our three divisions still has something to play for so there will be plenty of drama in the next few weeks.

Saturday was no different with big goals and big talking points up and down the National League. It was an action-packed day so we’ve picked out five things you may have missed…

Macclesfield go a point closer to the National League title

The Silkmen will have been disappointed with their draw at Ebbsfleet, which was shown live on BT Sport. Leading 2-0 with 20 minutes left to go, Macclesfield looked to be heading towards a big win. But Fleet had other ideas. Nathan Blissett’s red card helped their cause and goals from Danny Kedwell and Dean Rance ensured a share of the points. Still, it proved to be a point gained following Sutton’s defeat later in the day to AFC Fylde. The gap is now ten points - can Macclesfield be caught? It will take something special!

The top seven could have a much different look come the end of April

It’s still all to play for in the National League play-off race. Sutton United and Tranmere Rovers, with their games in hand, look safe. But even third-placed Aldershot know they can’t afford many slip-ups. The chasing pack of Dover Athletic, Ebbsfleet United and Bromley are all in decent form and ready to pounce on any mistakes from the current play-off incumbents.

Chester are the first to go down in the National League

The 2-0 home defeat to rivals Tranmere Rovers saw the Blues relegated into the second tier. Marcus Bignot knows he won’t be in charge next season and Chester now need to formulate a plan ahead of next season so that they’re in a strong position to bounce back. The National League North is extremely tough, however, and the club will need to pull together to ensure a seamless transition of management.

Salford City bosses bring up their century to inch closer to promotion

The Ammies just about did enough to see off battling Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday and give joint-bosses Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley their 100th wins at Salford. It was a crucial one too, with Harrogate Town picking up an impressive derby win at York City. Both clubs know they need to keep on winning but the ball is in Salford’s court.

It would take a brave man to predict the destination of the NL South title!

The title race everybody was talking about may now be down to just two sides but that hasn’t made it any less enthralling. Havant & Waterlooville showed they can scrap on Saturday, picking up a vital victory at Welling United. Dartford also grabbed three points - seeing off Weston-super-Mare. If the Darts can win their game in hand, they will return to the top on goal difference. With just a handful of fixtures left, it’s all about who can handle the pressure.
