BT Sport Ready For Another Wet And Wild Weekend!

By Sam Elliott

Title chasers beware - that means you, Boreham Wood.

Maidenhead United like nothing more than pushing the promotion hunters off their perch in Berkshire.

That means BT Sport should have themselves a fascinating match this weekend.

Their great home record against the fancied team started in October when Wrexham’s Hollywood owners were treated to a thriller - but the box office viewing came for the Magpies fans.

Then in December, high-flying Bromley were brought down to earth with a bump.

Already in 2022, two title chasers have fallen - Chesterfield and FC Halifax Town both undone within four days of each other.

Not bad for a Maidenhead side struggling against relegation all season long.

Luke Garrard’s team moved into third on Tuesday after getting the job done against Altrincham.

They are now 13 unbeaten in the National League, and of course some fantastic FA Cup results sit alongside it.

“Their record at home is frightening, they have beaten some big teams, too,” Garrard said after the 2-0 win over the Robins.

“They have players in their ranks to cause any team some problems.

“It’s tough - their game with Wealdstone on Tuesday was called off so they will be fresher.

“We need to go there and stick to our guns. We aren’t foolish - we will need to dictate as best we can our game plan and give it everything we’ve got.”

On Tuesday’s professional win, he said: “I couldn’t care less if the performance was scrappy, it was just so important to get the win.

“I need to make sure fatigue doesn’t set it - we’ve had a lot of games recently.”

They could face a bumper home support on Saturday tea time.

Tickets for the game are just £5 for adults, while all children under the age of 16 will be free.

Alan Devonshire has called on his players to show more of the same against another big hitter this weekend.

He also wants to give what is sure to be a big crowd reason to come back.

The West Ham legend was frustrated at his team’s inability to see off Eastleigh last time out.

The game ended 2-2 with Reece Smith grabbing a point in a game the manager felt his side did enough to win.

But he also knows they save their best for the teams with it all to play for at the top of the table.

He said: “I felt we should have won last weekend, but the players did well.

“This season we have shown we aren’t scared of anyone and hopefully we can continue that.

“We’ve got to keep going and keep working hard. Hopefully the fans turn out in big numbers and really get behind the boys.”

But Devonshire needs his team to do a lot better than the last time his team came up against Wood.

A 4-0 defeat in Hertfordshire back in November was an afternoon he understandably wishes to forget.

The manager said: “We need to really be at the races as we know they’re a good side.”
