Watson Makes A Case For The Heed Defence

Maybe it’s the defender in him, but Steve Watson appeared more pleased with his Gateshead side’s clean sheet at Maidenhead than the three goals!

“Needless to say I’m delighted, but I’m delighted with a number of things,” the new boss explained.

“It’s not just a good three points away from home. We played very well and scored some terrific goals. If we were a little more crisper with our final pass it could have been a lot more.

“Even when we went 3-0 up my only thought was us keeping a clean sheet. That performance deserved a clean sheet as well as the three points.”

It was a great display from the fast improving Heed. They were 2-0 up within eight minutes and five minutes after half time completed the job.

Luke Hannant grabbed two goals in Berkshire but as Watson told the club’s audio service it isn’t just about goals.

“That was our most complete performance since I have been at the club. It was a team performance as well which was the pleasing thing - every player had a good game,” he said.

“The key is now to keep improving. We have some very tough games coming up.

“As soon as I came here I said we needed more clean sheets so to have four already is great.

“It was the first thing which we needed to address and to play some good stuff on top of that, I’m delighted.”
