The Most Effective Strike Partnerships In The National League

By Tom Feaheny

We have decided to look at nine strike partnerships that simply work, with the pairs helping their teams and getting plenty of goals as well.

While some of these pairings have a long standing partnership some that have been used to great effect for more than one club, others met only this season, writes Tom Feaheny.

National League

AFC Fylde: Rowe and Muldoon = 27 goals

Danny Rowe and Jack Muldoon both impressed last season, with Rowe staying with the Coasters after his goals helped them get into the National League, while Muldoon played his part in helping Lincoln City get to League Two, on paper these two should have got goals and that it what has happened.

While Rowe is the leading goal scorer in the league with 19 to his name so far, including a brace this past weekend at Gateshead, Muldoon has chipped in with another eight with some being crucial winners including his goal at Bromley.

With AFC Fylde in the play-off places, these two can take a lot of credit for the fine start to 2018 Dave Challinor's side has had.

Tranmere Rovers: Norwood and Cook = 27 goals

These two strikers are separated by just one strike with Cook on 14 and Norwood on 13 goals so far this season, their form has played a key role in Rovers going from mid-table to fighting for top spot in a matter of months.

Recently in the 3-0 win against Ebbsfleet United it was Cook who got one and Norwood who grabbed a double.

To show how influential they have been they have scored 17 of the last 37 goals for Rovers in the past couple of months.

Sutton United: Dundas and Wright = 18 goals

Manager Paul Doswell praised Tommy Wright and challenged him to get 25 goals this season, so far he is on 11, with six goals in as many games.

Meanwhile Craig Dundas who has been with the club is having his best season in the National League.

Their goals have helped United to 4th so far and just three points off top.

National League North

Stockport County: Warburton and Oswell = 32 goals

These two were playing in different countries last season with Jason Oswell making the move from Newtown to County while Warburton made a shorter trip from Curzon Ashton.

Oswell's record of 20 goals in his first season so far for County has been impressive with Warburton chipping in with key goals as well.

If County are to make the play-offs the form of these two will be important.

Bradford Park Avenue: Boyes and Johnson = 26 goals

Johnson and Boyes are another pair who can't be separated for goals and they worked wonders in helping Guiseley gain promotion to the National League and are helping Avenue in their battle to get into the play-offs.

The duo have scored over half the goals for Avenue so far this season.

The pair were both brought in by ex Guiseley boss Mark Bower to Avenue and their proven track record of working well together has happened once again.

Harrogate Town: Ainge & Leesley = 27 goals

This is the only pair who have gone their separate ways in recent weeks with Ainge leaving for Wrexham last week.

These two had both impressed together with 14 goals for Leesley and Ainge leaving on 13 which was even more impressive due to him missing over three months of the season through injury.

With Leesley cutting in from the wing to score some impressive goals as well.

The duo have played a vital role in Town now being top of the table.

National League South

Dartford: Pavey and Pugh = 28 goals

The duo scored seven between them in January to help Dartford remain top of the Vanarama National League South.

While Andy Pugh has been with the side since the summer of 2014, Alfie Pavey had a loan spell and joined permanently last year, with the latter on 17 goals so far.

Dartford raised the question on social media are they the best strike partnership in the league recently and it is hard to argue they are not.

East Thurrock United: Higgins and Smith 25 goals

The top scorer of the Vanarama National League South is included in this partnership.

With Sam Higgins currently on 19 goals so far this season.

He is joined by Lewis Smith who has scored in three of his last four games.

St Albans City: Merson and Walker = 21 goals

The son of Paul Merson, Sam is having a fine season at City, recently signing a new deal.

He has scored 15 times so far during the current Vanarama National League South campaign.

Ex Aldershot Town striker Charlie Walker has six to his name so far.
