Round-Up: Vanarama National League South

By Steve Whitney

Truro City sit top of the Vanarama National League South table after becoming the first team to defeat East Thurrock United this season on Saturday.

The White Tigers made the long trek to Essex and were ahead through Noah Keats after 22 minutes.

But 2 minutes later, Ed Palmer was dismissed, leaving Truro a long time to holds onto their lead.

Lewis Palmer eventually pulled the Rocks level from the penalty spot just past the hour-mark, but another spot-kick, this time with less than a minute of normal time remaining and converted by Connor Riley-Lowe, earned the ten-men a terrific win.

Braintree Town’s InmongeryDirect Stadium home remained their fortress as they secured their fourth win of the season.

Hungerford Town arrived in Essex with an impressive record of having won their previous three outings on the road under joint-caretaker managers Ian Herring and Jon Boardman.

But they found themselves blown away by a Braintree blitz in the final 15 minutes of the first half when Roman Michael-Percil with a brace, Ben Wyatt and Phil Roberts made it 4-0 to the Iron.

The second half was more low key, but Roberts added his second on 68 minutes to make it a nap hand for the home side.

A much-changed Whitehawk side held third-placed St Albans City to a 1-1 draw at the Enclosed Ground.

The Hawks led through Pape Gueye`s 16th minute opener.

But the Saints shared the points to spoil Steve King`s homecoming when Kieran Monlouis equalised just before half-time.

Weston-super-Mare enjoyed a fourth successive unbeaten game as they beat Dartford 3-0 at the Woodspring Stadium.

The visitors started strongly but it was Weston who drew first blood after 18 minutes through Gethyn Hill.

Hill grabbed his and the Seagulls second 3 minutes later and a 47th minute strike from Archie Collins was enough to seal all three points for the home side.

Despite an amazing finale, Welling United earned a good 3-2 win at Westleigh Park against Havant & Waterlooville.

Jack Jebb gave the Wings a 31st minute lead that Wes Fogden cancelled out 10 minutes later, only for Jebb to restore the visitors` lead within a minute.

Joe Healy then made it 3-1 on the hour-mark before the grand finale which started in the 86th minute when Havant are awarded a penalty for Jamie Coyle`s foul on Matty Tubbs for which Coyle saw red for a second bookable offence.

Dillon Barnes then shoved Alfie Rutherford to the ground and is shown a straight red card.

Jason Prior`s penalty was saved, but he made no mistake from open play second later.

However, the nine-men held firm for the remaining few seconds.

Newly-promoted Chippenham Town enjoyed their best win since gaining a place in the National League South by hammering Hemel Hempstead Town 5-1 at Hardenhuish Park.

Goals either side of the half-time break from loanee Scott Twine had the Bluebirds two-up.

Phil Walsh reduced the deficit on 52 minutes, but a brace from David Pratt after 61 and 83 minutes and a fifth from Matt Smith a minute later sealed a fine win for Mark Collier`s side.

Eastbourne Borough earned a 2-0 Priory Lane win over Oxford City.

Manny Odubade gave Boro a 16th minute lead.

And on 49 minutes, Sergio Torres bursts through the City defence and rifled into the top corner to double the home side`s lead – a lead they held on to.

There was a dramatic finish at the Beveree as Hampton & Richmond Borough salvaged a point from a 1-1 draw with second-bottom Concord Rangers.

The Beachboys led through Kyron Farrell`s 26th minute effort going into the final seconds of the game.

Then Hampton`s big midweek signing from Bath City, striker Marvin Morgan, was brought down and a straight red card was shown to Concord`s Steve King.

And Bradley Hudson-Odoi stepped up to convert the resulting penalty to grab a point for the Beavers.

It also finished even-steven at Nyewood Lane between Bognor Regis Town and Gloucester City.

Ollie Pearce gave the home Rocks the boost of a goal right on the stroke of half-time.

Jimmy Muitt then put the home side two-up with 20 minutes remaining, only for Ed Williams to pull one back within 3 minutes and then grab a point for the Tigers 4 minutes into stoppage time.

It finished goalless at Tatnam between Poole Town and Chelmsford City and also at Twerton Park between Bath City and Wealdstone, although both sides finished with ten-men.

Bath did really well as they lost Darren Jones to a straight red card after only 5 minutes.

Ryan Sellars evened the numbers up on the field just shy of the hour-mark.
