Beavers’ Case In Point Leaves Josh Loving The Drama

Scary, nervy, gut-wrenching, twitchy. Just a few of the adjectives to paint a picture of a title race with five weeks left.

But fun? According to one of the National League South’s best defenders this season, that’s just what it is!

Hampton & Richmond’s Josh Casey doesn’t go in for all the overused phrases at this time of the year.

He should know. The captain and his club have been involved at the top end for the past three years.

The cat was placed firmly amongst the pigeons on Tuesday night. Havant’s recent inconclusive spell saw them lose at Truro City while Hampton got the job done at home to Hungerford to move within two points of top spot, level with second place Dartford.

Casey doesn’t do pressure. He is just loving every minute of it again.

“It’s really tight, it’s fun,” said the full-back. “There’s still so much to play for and Tuesday night made things even more interesting.

“It’s hoping Havant slip up now. There’s no real pressure on us at all - it’s a nice position to be in, the underdogs.

“The play-offs would be a massive overachievement for a club of our size - we are punching well above our weight again. The likes of Havant and Dartford have a lot of pressure on them as they are expected to go up and expected to perform.

“It’s great beating the underdog but now we are starting to get a bit more respect. When we first came into the National League I’m not actually sure everyone respected us but that’s changing now.

“For us it’s quite simple really. We have just got to enjoy the ride and see what happens.

“I think we are on the same page here as a team. We want to win and want to achieve something.”

Hampton play Braintree at home on Saturday before Good Friday’s potentially huge match at Dartford.

“We owe them both one really,” said the Beavers full back, who called Tuesday’s win over Hungerford “professional”.

“Braintree beat us earlier in the season at their place and Dartford came from behind to nick a point here in the first game so that gives us a little extra.”
