Who's Hot And Who's Not In The National League

By Steven Coney

Form is temporary, class is permanent. Or so the old saying goes. But at this time of year, a good run can turn a season around.

Confidence is always key in football and the only way to get it is by picking up victories - easier said than done.

We’ve looked at the last six games for the hottest and coldest teams in the Vanarama National League - is your team included?

Who’s Hot

Sutton United

The U’s remain in the National League title race following a run of four wins and two draws in their last six games. Impressive victories over Dagenham & Redbridge and Dover have helped propel them back up to second. They’ve also scored the joint most amount of goals in the last six fixtures, netting 12 times.

Boreham Wood

Their first game of the six-match run ended in defeat against Dover but Boreham Wood bounced back to record four straight wins before Saturday’s goalless draw at Woking. Luke Garrard’s men look like they will be in the end of season shake-up and they’ve got enough quality to worry the very best in the division.

Macclesfield Town

Just when you thought the Silkmen were running out of steam, they find a second wind. Since the 6-0 defeat at AFC Fylde and disappointing home draw against Torquay, Macclesfield have won four in a row. Perhaps more importantly, that includes victories against title rivals Aldershot Town and Tranmere Rovers.

Ebbsfleet United

Another side who have won four in a row. Boss Daryl McMahon wrote off his side’s chances of a play-off spot and after back-to-back 3-0 defeats against Boreham Wood and Tranmere, most would have agreed with him. But a quartet of wins - all by one goal - have pushed Fleet up to eighth and they’re only outside the top seven on goal difference.

Solihull Moors

It could be the story of the season if Solihull manage to stay up. When Mark Yates took over, there was little hope that the Moors would be playing National League football next season. But they’ve been very good recently, beating Dover, Dagenham and Woking and picking up draws against high-flyers Macclesfield and Wrexham.

Who’s Not

Maidstone United

The Stones’ poor run has been well documented. It looked like it was finally coming to an end of Saturday before Tranmere scored two late goals to win at the Gallagher Stadium. November 11th was the date of Maidstone’s last National League victory and they’ve lost five of their last six as they continue to struggle.

Guiseley

It’s not been a particularly happy time of late at Guiseley either. Paul Cox departed the club after the 1-0 defeat to Gateshead, their fifth reverse in six games. Caretaker boss Sean St Ledger oversaw last week’s surprise victory over AFC Fylde but the Lions will need a lot more of those to avoid relegation.

Hartlepool United

Another club similar to Maidstone that have slowly slipped down the National League table. Pools have picked up just four points from their last six fixtures and now sit two places above the bottom four. The club are searching for a new manager following Craig Harrison’s exit - it’s not a job for the faint hearted.
