What Happened This Afternoon In The National League?

By Sam Elliott

Macclesfield Town climbed six points clear at the top of the National League as the weather caused chaos for their rivals.

The Silkmen’s dramatic 3-2 win at Woking was a fantastic advert for the league in the live BT Sport match.

John Askey’s side showed the character needed after their winner four minutes into time added on. Danny Whitehead’s shot squirmed in to win it when Woking thought they had a point on the board thanks to Reece Grego-Cox.

Charlie Carter put the hosts ahead before Nathan Blissett levelled things up. Macc went ahead through Tyrone Marsh then the late drama begun.

The game was played in terrible conditions but their title rivals could only watch on and wonder.

Sutton United’s match at Maidenhead was abandoned at half-time with Paul Doswell’s side 3-2 ahead.

Tranmere Rovers and their fans were frustrated - their game at Dover Athletic was called off by the referee with the players already at the Crabble.

Boreham Wood will probably need the play-offs now following their 0-0 draw at home to Barrow, who picked up a useful point in the battle to stay in the National League.

So did their relegation rivals Solihull - the Moors’ 0-0 draw at home to Aldershot wasn’t enough to take them out of the bottom four.

Torquay United aren’t down yet as Gary Owers’ men won 2-0 at seemingly doomed Chester. The Gulls went ahead through Rhys Healey after three minutes and kept their composure.

It was game over when in-form Elliott Romaine doubled their lead - they have a game in hand and are now only seven points shy of survival.

Guiseley’s time in the National League is nearing its end as they went down 3-1 at home to Leyton Orient.

It was a brave effort by Sean St Ledger’s ten men but a Jobi McAnuff double and a late David Mooney goal means it is now a matter of time before relegation is confirmed for the Lions.

Hartlepool United suddenly appear nearly safe - a third win in a row, a great 2-1 victory at Maidstone United, pushes the Pools further clear of trouble.

Michael Woods was at the double to confirm the victory. Ross Lafayette’s late consolation couldn’t spark a recovery.

Gateshead and Dagenham drew 0-0 - the long trip was almost perfect for John Still’s side but Heed keeper James Montgomery once again save a penalty. Jake Howells couldn’t convert as both side had to settle for the draw.

Wrexham
drew again - their title challenge has been stunted by their inability to turn one point in three since the turn of the year.

A 1-1 draw a ten man Bromley leaves then ten points off the top. Brandon Hanlan’s penalty drew the FA Trophy finalists level after James Jennings put the Welsh club ahead.

It was a brave point for Bromley - they had to play the whole of the second half with ten men after Rodger Johnson was sent off just before the break.

AFC Fylde are two points off the play-offs as they have secured a straight forward 2-0 win over FC Halifax Town.

Jonny Smith and James Hardy goals in the second half meant it was a good day for Dave Challinor’s Coasters.

Eastleigh and Ebbsfleet United didn’t get to put pressure on the top seven. Their game was called off early in the morning and will be played on April 17.
