What Happened On Saturday In The National League?

By Sam Elliott

We have new Vanarama National League leaders - but boy, it’s tight at the top.

Boreham Wood’s 1-0 victory over Southend United took Luke Garrard’s team top of the pile.

They earned the huge win when Tyrone Marsh struck seven minutes from time.

The Wood, pictured, replace Grimsby Town at the summit after their galling late defeat to a rapidly improving Notts County. Ruben Rodrigues yet again the difference.

Chesterfield won’t be devastated they don’t lead the way - they battled back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Just one point now separates the top three sides.

Bromley and FC Halifax fired blanks when many thought the freescorers would thrill. It was also 0-0 between Solihull Moors and Yeovil Town.

Wrexham couldn’t close the gap - Connor Lemonheigh-Evans earned Torquay United a 1-1 draw at the Racecourse.

Stockport County did. Scott Quigley, Paddy Madden, Oliver Crankshaw, Liam Hogan and Ben Whitfield made Dover Athletic pay, 5-2 it ended.

BT Sport matches lately have been laced with drama and today was no different.

Barnet beat Aldershot minutes from time as Robert Hall grabbed what could turn out to be a crucial late winner.

Tahvon Campbell turned things around for Woking, he re-discovered his form at the perfect time to secure a 3-2 home win over Altrincham.

Tyrone Barnett earned Eastleigh a 1-0 victory over Maidenhead, while Omar Mussa helped Weymouth to another big win over a rival down the bottom as they bettered King’s Lynn Town.

In the National League South, Dartford tasted defeat for the first time.

They lost 1-0 against back-in-form Dorking Wanderers, Matt Briggs won it six minutes from time.

St Albans City continue to shine, Mitchell Weiss’ late winner made it six wins from six as they turned it around against Eastbourne Borough.

Maidstone United lost again as Ryan Seager’s Hungerford Town hat-trick inspired the Crusaders.

There was also a treble for Havant & Waterlooville’s Jake McCarthy as Paul Doswell’s Hawks beat Chelmsford City 3-2.

There were also wins for Dulwich Hamlet, Oxford City and Peter Taylor’s Welling United.

In the National League North, AFC Fylde won at home again - the leaders saw off Gateshead 2-0 to stay four points clear.

Lee Ndlovu was on song as Brackley Town returned to action by beating Gloucester City 1-0.

Kidderminster Harriers were sensational as they eased past Spennymoor Town 4-0.

So were York City and they too had four different scorers as they saw off Blyth Spartants by the same scoreline.

Boston continue to pile on the pressure. Jordan Burrow and a Shane Byrne penalty finished off Hereford.

Darlington thrashed Guiseley 5-1, the visitors without a number of players for their tough trip to the north east.

Southport won again, Marcus Carver proved the difference as they beat Chester 3-2.
