Wednesday`s Pre-Season Friendly Review

By Steve Whitney

A round-up of Wednesday`s pre-season friendlies...

Matt Tubbs scored just four hours after signing for Vanarama National League club Forest Green Rovers in their pre-season friendly win over Sky Bet Championship side Cardiff City.

After Federico Macheda had given the Bluebirds a 24th minute lead, Tubbs, who joined the club earlier in the day from Portsmouth, came on as a half-time substitute and scored with a sublime strike on 71 minutes before setting up young striker Olly Mehew for the third 7 minutes from time.

Rovers were handed two penalties - Christian Doidge seeing Ben Wilson save superbly with the first before Kieffer Moore converted the second.

Forest Green`s league rivals Chester FC began their home pre-season campaign with a credible draw against neighbours Wigan Athletic.

Jon McCarthy's men put in a well-organised display to restrict their Championship opposition to limited chances and ensured a clean sheet.

James Alabi went closest for the home side on the stroke of half-time - denied from point blank range by Latics stopper Lee Nicholls.

The visitors had chances of their own as new keeper Liam Roberts saved well from Craig Davies before last season`s number one, Jon Worsnop, stopped Ryan Colclough in the latter stages of the game.

Chester`s league rivals Tranmere Rovers recorded a 3-3 draw in their latest pre-season outing as they played MK Dons at Athletic Union League in Dublin.

Rovers raced into a 2-0 lead in the first half after an impressive opening to proceedings.

Adam Mekki scored the first after good play to get past a couple of challenges, he fired in a sublime shot from 20 yards into the top corner.

James Norwood doubled the lead as he raced on to a forward pass to steer the ball past the MK goalkeeper from 15 yards.

The Dons got back into the game when a long range effort went past Scott Davies, before a couple of well worked strikes gave them a 3-2 lead at the break.

Changes were made by both teams during the second half as players were building up the minutes under their belts.

A few minutes before the end, Connor Jennings capitalised on a slack pass by the opposition and played in Jake Kirby who raced in on goal and slid the ball past the goalkeeper for a well-deserved equaliser.

National League new boys Dagenham & Redbridge secured a 3-1 win at Ryman League Division One North neighbours Thurrock in their first pre-season outing.

Luke Guttridge gave the Daggers a 25th minute lead before Oliver Hawkins added a second just before the break.

Ross Wall reduced the deficit shortly after half-time, but the visitors scored again through Leo Donnellan on 75 minutes to make it 3-1.

National League North side Alfreton Town shared a 1-1 draw with Championship play-off finalists Sheffield Wednesday at the Impact Arena.

Dan Bradley’s late header cancelled out Barry Bannan’s 56th minute thunderbolt for the Owls.

Alfreton`s new league rivals Salford City won 3-0 at Cheshire League side Rylands.

Goals from Matt Warburton, Luke Clark and Josh Hine were enough to win at Gorsey Lane.

National League South club Weston-super-Mare were beaten 3-1 at the Woodspring Stadium by League One new boys Bristol Rovers.

Kick-off had to be delayed due to crowd congestion at the turnstiles, and when the game got started, former Seagull Jamie Lucas, Jermaine Easter and Rory Gaffney were the Gas men on target, with Eliot Richards replying for the hosts.
