Walker Ready To Run As Barnet's Keeper Hits The Road

Barnet’s Laurie Walker is certainly putting to the test the theory that goalkeepers have it easy between the posts.

Those that reckon they glovesmen have got it made as their team-mates race around at high speeds should grab a word with the Bees’ stopper.

Walker is on a mission to raise as much money as possible by running 62 miles throughout March all in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Losing 26-year-old team-mate Spencer McCall to the disease back in 2021, and with family and friends impacted by cancer, he says it’s personal.

The Hive number one would love the backing of all National League supporters, even if they aren’t on his side on matchdays.

Laurie is taking on the challenge with Barnet in the middle of their own, sitting third in the table and plotting another EFL attempt via the play-offs.

He told us: “Cancer has had an impact on my family and quite a lot of my friends so this is something I knew I had to do.

“It’s an illness that doesn’t discriminate and can literally get anyone - I just want to try and make a difference where I can and help find some live-saving research.

“If it helps someone suffering somewhere, then fantastic. I like to push myself fitness wise, and did four mile every 48 hours for the Dave Boggins run a few years ago.

“It's two miles a day every day in March and I'm looking forward to getting the trainers on. It was be brilliant to raise some money and of course some awareness in the process.”
