1-1 FA Cup Aldershot Town By Stefan Baisden

Magpies live to fight another FA Cup day Comments (0) Share0Tweet0 1-1 draw at York Road means a visit to Aldershot - but it was almost a big upset Magpies share honours with Shots 6:15pm Sat 12th Nov 11:: written by Graeme Copas Maidenhead United (1) 1, Aldershot Town (0) 1 The Magpies live to fight another day after their entertaining FA Cup 1st round battle with the Shots ended all-square, but it could have been so much better as they led up until the 77th minute. Anthony Thomas gave the Magpies the lead after just six minutes when he cut inside from the left flank and brilliantly curled the ball inside the far post. It was a perfectly executed strike and gave the Magpies and their supporters real belief that they could go on and win the match. Aldershot enjoyed the majority of the possession and peppered the area with accurate, deep crosses to Danny Hylton and Peter Vincenti, but the hosts defended well and in numbers, snuffing out any threat. By the half-time interval, Sam Beasant in the Magpies goal had not had a save to make, something that Aldershot manager Dean Holdsworth acknowledged by substituting his strikers for Michael Rankine and Alex Rodman at the start of the second half. It was these two who, as the visitors piled on the pressure, eventually earned the Shots a replay when, on 77 minutes, Rodman ran at the heart of a tring defence and squared for Rankine to side foot home from just six yards. Agonisingly for the Magpies they had enjoyed a chance, just 10 minutes before that, to almost wrap up the tie. The excellent Bobby Behzadi won the ball in mdifield and, after playing a give-and go, released striker Asham Holgate in on goal. But from just inside the area, Holgate could only pull his shot wide with his less favoured left peg with just Jamie Young in goal to beat. It was one of the few Magpies opportunities in the second half, as they found themselves defendng deep against waves of Aldershot attacks. Yet, as had been the case all afternoon, the Shots enjoyed territory and possession, but created little in front of goal. By the end the Magpies, dead on their feet, were holding on, especially when they went down to 10 men with minutes remainng after Martell Powell had to leave the pitch injured. But hold on they did, and thoroughly deserve to have another crack at their more senior opponents, which they will get to do on Tuesday, November 22 at The Ebb Stadium.
