Vanarama's National League North fan preview: Southport

Southport’s Stuart Green is the man in the know and he puts his cards on the table as he talks Port and promotion.

League sponsors Vanarama have been getting the fans’ perspective ahead of the new season - which kicks off this Saturday

It seems to have taken a long time to come but the new season is getting ever closer – what lies ahead for your side?
Hopefully some progress on the field. Last season we consolidated our position and with the nucleus of the squad retained, we look forward to pushing for the top end of the table.

We saw the best and worst of Southport last season. It’s ten years since you won the National League North last time. Strong players like Kieran Glynn signed on. Are you far away from the top seven?
Not far, I hope. You never really know until the season gets going and actually see how everyone else is shaping up.

Which signing could be the one you’ve been waiting for?
Kieran Glynn looks a decent signing, but the best bit of business is retaining the backbone of the squad.

So, what will be different this season from last?
Realistic expectations.

If you had to warn others about anyone, who would it be?
Dion Charles has proved himself at this level and can push on. Morgan Homson-Smith is an exciting prospect who hopefully will get a chance to prove himself this season.

Who will be the teams to beat this year?
I think York will be strong. Brackley were unlucky to miss out on promotion last season. Gateshead are an unknown quantity after all their troubles.

What ground are you most looking forward to visiting and why?
King’s Lynn. I live in Cambridgeshire and King’s Lynn is 25 minutes away.

And what game would you like to win more than any other any why!
It’s always good to beat Chester and as we have them in the Christmas/New Year double-header it would be nice to pick up six points from them.

Which player would you love to see line-up for you?
I really liked Jordan Hulme at Altrincham. I’d love to see him partner Sammo [Jack Sampson] at Haig Avenue.

You’re looking into the future – where in the table are you in April?
Definitely play-offs, hopefully even better.
