Unibet's Vanarama National League Matchday 16 Preview

By Sam Elliott

Who will get their timing just right in the last game before the clocks go back?

Daylight saving time is usually a good football barometer - a good start can officially be classified as ‘we’re in the hunt’ as reality dawns for those at the other end.

There's also the small matter of a live BT Sport game between FC Halifax Town and Oldham Athletic. So who will be hands-on this Saturday, and which clubs will be left in the dark?

Chesterfield vs Boreham Wood

If either of these clubs’ challenge is to be more than just for the play-offs, now’s the time to put a run together.

Although Chesterfield got back to winning ways against Bromley, they could hold the lead against York City in midweek. It means just one win in five as the teams above them start to put their foot down.

Boreham Wood’s ambition is less lofty, but Luke Garrard would have been hoping to be this year’s Sutton or Barrow - the total outsider romping home.

While their form and performances aren’t at all bad, the Hertfordshire side will want to get back to the levels of September when they won three on the bounce.

Wrexham vs Altrincham

They do say home is where the heart is.

After beating FC Halifax on Tuesday night, Wrexham started a season with eight home wins in all competitions for the first time in more than 50 years.

They have scored 32 times in front of their own fans already.

But you get the feeling they are going to be worked a lot harder than in most of those games this weekend.

In what has been called the Phil Parkinson derby because of the namesake managers, Alty - bottom just a few weeks ago - have now won four of their last six after seeing off Oldham in midweek.

Notts County vs Torquay United

It was the joy of six for Notts County on Tuesday night.

A sixth win in a row was secured with a 6-1 at Wealdstone.

An hour in and the in-play table showed Luke Williams’ side six points clear. That was before a Wrexham fightback at home to FC Halifax Town made it as-you-were at the summit.

It’s a tail of top vs bottom on Saturday, and the Magpies’ head coach has understandably called for full focus.

The Gulls couldn’t follow up their epic second half against Altrincham last week to take anything from Eastleigh.

Torquay still haven’t won since the first few days of September, but Gary Johnson would have checked the fixture list.

If they can take something from their trip to the leaders, then home games with Aldershot, Dorking Wanderers and Chesterfield follow in quick succession.

Then there’s the little matter of Derby County sandwiched in between. Sure, it could get worse before it get better but the experienced boss is battle ready and is up for the fight.

It’s sure to be another absorbing National League weekend!
