Under-The-Radar Has Worked Wonders For Weymouth

Quiet Weymouth silenced a lot of their critics by winning promotion, according to manager Mark Molesley.

But it’s the fans and volunteers who should take most of the credit, he says, after the club’s resurrection continues.

The Terras have tip-toed back to Step 1 for the first time since 2009, back-to-back promotions - but never once talked-up their chances.

It wasn’t always this way of course, financial issues dogged the club and they found themselves a midtable Southern League side when the new manager took over in 2017.

How things have changed. Saturday’s penalty shoot out win over Dartford means they can look forward to huge matches with West Country big boys Yeovil Town and Torquay United next term.

“It is wonderful, I’m just so proud,” said the former Aldershot winger.

“It has been a rapid decline from the National League and the club had stagnated - it took a lot of hard work to keep Weymouth alive.

“If it wasn’t for the volunteers, the club would be gone. It’s because of them we still have a team.

“If it wasn’t for the fans who raised an incredible amount of money, we would not have been able to compete in the play-offs at all.

“People thought we couldn’t get the club back to where it used to be in the National League, they said it couldn’t be done.

“But together we have proved a lot of doubters wrong – it’s a fantastic feeling.”

He says going under the radar has really worked.

“Nobody expected big things from us, and I’m sure it will be the same next season,” he said.

“We are not the type of club to shout things from the rooftops, we try and go about our work quietly.

“But we have full belief in ourselves and we have shown what a together team we are.”
