Top Trio Get Their Hands On The National League North Awards!

By Sam Elliott

It’s time to put awards in hands once again - so who were the shining lights of September in the National League North?

In a month which saw quite a number of managerial comings and goings, Alun Armstrong appears to be just getting started in his third year at Darlington.

The Quakers were simply sensational - and won every game they played.

With Mark Beck helping the club on their way, they recorded victories over Boston United, Bradford PA, Peterborough Sports and Blyth Spartans in the league, and they also saw off Southport in the FA Trophy.

The fans thought the play-offs could be on this season - but maybe ambition may have already shifted?

They ended the month just one point off top spot and they take on table-topping King’s Lynn Town in a few weeks.

There are few footballers fans can pin their hopes on more than Nick Haughton.

Talk about doing exactly what he says on the tin, there’s not many more reliable out there - you know what you are getting, and that’s match winning performances.

AFC Fylde recognise they are lucky to have the 28-year-old and he was sizzling again in September.

The attacking midfielder finished last season as runner-up – with 26 goals - in the Golden Boot race to Macaulay Langstaff.

With him gone and scoring a level up, Haughton already had nine to his name this time around.

Fact is, without the dependable player they would be sitting 18th in the table.

He scored seven goals in six games last month with doubles against Farsley Celtic, Bradford PA and Spennymoor with another one against AFC Telford for good measure.

We love the Vanarama Volunteer of the Month award, and thanks to the National League’s title sponsors we get to honour those who go the extra mile - all for the love of their club.

It’s not always straight-forward when a club wins promotion.

There’s so much to do and many boxes to tick to ensure you are ready for the step up and Scarborough Athletic’s Steve Smith knows all about that.

The helpful Seadog was instrumental in getting the place ready for National League football - and the players are certainly rewarding his hard work so far!

Steve dedicated his summer weekends and evenings after his full time job to being at the Flamingo Land Stadium, alongside other volunteer Pete Wannop.

The technician made many trips across North Yorkshire to collect important equipment - in addition to his usual volunteer duties of preparing the pitch in advance of every home game.

The club say they are so thankful to him and the other unpaid hard workers who give up their free time to make a difference.

Congratulations to all our fantastic winners!
