The Title Belongs To Macclefield Now: Sutton's Doswell

The Vanarama National League title belongs to Macclesfield Town - that is the view of Sutton United manager Paul Doswell.

The chasers’ 3-0 home defeat to Bromley paired with another Silkmen victory today means the championship is all-but theirs, Doswell claims.

Macclesfield now have a nine point lead and the boss of second place Sutton says the game is up for his club and the others.

“That’s Macclesfield’s title today,” he said to the National League’s Oli Osborn. “We had to keep winning and I think we now have to be looking at second or third place.

“That’s the aim, and it’s probably been the aim since they beat Gateshead and Woking in the final minutes.

“We have not got to dust ourselves down and try to get as many points on the board as possible to finish as high as we can.”

Sutton had a bad day in front of the BT Sport cameras and the manager had few complaints.

“Bromley were deserved winners, better on the day and we now have to recover, recuperate and go again next weekend,” he said.

“The second goal was a big moment. They broke on us just before half-time and we had nobody at the back. It was a criminal goal to give away.

“We now have a trip to AFC Fylde, who are one of the best attacking sides around.

“They have beaten the top team five and six this year so we have to be aware going up to their ground but we need to bounce back from this defeat as soon as possible.”
