The BT Sport Focus Falls On Bromley & Shots' Next Step

By Sam Elliott

To assess both Bromley and Aldershot’s season so far, you probably won’t go too far wrong by starting with the phrase ‘one step forward, two steps back’.

Every time either get within touching distance of the play-offs, something steps into their eyeline blocking the view.

The BT Sport cameras will be zooming in to see if one of the clubs can find their focus on Saturday.

Aldershot manager Danny Searle admits he would rather not be travelling to Hayes Lane to try and put their Weymouth set-back to one side this weekend.

Neil Smith would probably rather not be welcoming them, either.

Not because the Bromley boss is a bad host. Most visitors have been leaving their ground with a smile on their face for months.

In fact they have been offering top notch, highly generous hospitality.

The only club undefeated on their travels this season are being held back by their unconvincing home form.

Seven without a win, they threw away a two-goal lead on Tuesday night against Woking.

But manager Smith says their record on their own patch isn’t playing on his mind.

The cameras bring the best out of his side and the 49-year-old is hoping there’s a repeat on BT Sport that his team’s fans really want to watch.

He told the club’s video player following Tuesday’s night’s 2-2 draw: “We could have some players back from injury on Saturday, but they will have to work hard to get in the side.

“Aldershot is another tough game, and the cameras are here too.

“We’re looking for the same type of performances as the last time we were on BT Sport against Solihull Moors. It was a fantastic win against a side excellent at home.

“We’re disappointed to let the two-goal lead slip, but I thought we did really well,” he added.

“We let another soft goal in but there were some players out there who hadn’t played for a long time, you wouldn’t have noticed it.

“It’s a start for us. I’m proud of the boys and the minimum we deserved was a point.

“Our fitness levels are fine, and we looked really sharp. There are places up for grabs but we have a good squad.”

Counterpart Searle cut a frustrated figure in midweek - and wasn’t about to let his players get off lightly following their first-half display on Tuesday.

A win would have taken the Hampshire club level on points with the top seven but they fell to defeat at home to struggling Weymouth.

“When you look at what other clubs have in the league, it’s not our job to be in and around the play-offs - let’s be blunt about it,” he told the Shots YouTube channel.

“Our job is to progress the club from where it was last season. In every column we have done that.

“But could we achieve the play-offs this year? I see no reason why not. We have to keep working on our game.”

But he added: “I told them after the game they have to grow up. You can’t legislate for mistakes like we made, we have been letting in too many goals.

“I back us to score two or three against anyone, but you can’t do what we did in the first half in this league, it’s as simple as that.

“Saturday will be a tough game but we do bounce back.

"I would rather not have to be travelling to Bromley to try and do that if I am being honest, but we are - that’s the league.

“We have to go there and roll our sleeves up. We have to go back to the drawing board.”
