The Bank Holiday Double Bill Begins With A Friday Feast

By Sam Elliott

The football is coming thick and fast and part one of the Bank Holiday double bill begins on Friday night and ends with a live Saturday coastal collision.

There’s three matches this evening as six clubs look to get ahead of the rest. Solihull Moors will hit top spot if they avoid defeat at home to FC Halifax - that is at least until Barnet go to Dagenham & Redbridge a day later.

Rochdale can make a solid start a really good one with a third win at home to Bromley, who are looking for their first victory while Southend United tackle Eastleigh at Roots Hall.

The TNT Sports game on Saturday comes from Hartlepool United, whose impressive National League return has already heralded three wins. AFC Fylde have returned too and with four points on the board, Adam Murray will be asking for more as the north west meets north east.

Chesterfield have had a brilliant start and it’s a measure of how competitive it is that they slipped from top to third after Oldham’s late equaliser last weekend - despite looking good for 12 points from 12.

Now they go to Altrincham looking to put that blow to one side, while Wealdstone - so impressive so far and sitting in fifth - want to show Aldershot Town that they’ll be no pushovers once again this season.

Oxford City opened their account with a point against FC Halifax and they’re at Maidenhead trying to get the first win on the board but Alan Devonshire’s Magpies are off to a strong start and occupy an early play-off spot.

Gateshead have scored eight goals in two games and welcome Woking, while York City are still chasing their opening three-point haul and they travel to Dorking Wanderers. Ebbsfleet and Kidderminster have both had comfortable starts after promotion and they meet in Kent.

Oldham Athletic manager David Unsworth says he isn’t overly worried by one win in four after a summer of spending and knows the landscape can change if they leave Boreham Wood with a win.

There is, of course, some big early season Vanarama National League North games ahead this weekend.

Leaders Scunthorpe United have started as they mean to go on and take their unbeaten start to tricky Curzon Ashton on Saturday.

Spennymoor sit in second place and host Bishop’s Stortford while fast starters Blyth Spartans are at Buxton. Warrington and Boston United will be happy so far and they cross swords looking for three more points.

Southport have lost their last 13 league matches and need to stop the rot, they travel to Brackley Town and they’re still without a manager.

It has been an exciting start to the Vanarama National League South season with some shock names sitting at the summit.

Aveley have done incredibly well so far, they host Dartford next as Worthing - top of the table despite defeat last weekend - make the trip to Dover Athletic.

Weston-super-Mare want to put their set-back against Slough Town to one side with victory at Farnborough. Chelmsford and Weymouth are both in the top seven, so their clash has extra significance.

Torquay United will be tested by Slough after their big win last time. Yeovil Town have another Huish Park home game, this time against Tonbridge Angels.

The early season bottom two meet desperate to turn things around. Welling United and Havant & Waterlooville meet after a first few weeks to forget. Who can get their campaign up and running?
