Team Of The Weekend: The National League

By Sam Elliott

We witnessed a weekend of high emotion and mixed emotions. The penultimate weekend of the National league season drew contrasting feelings.

While Macclesfield Town took the headlines and title glory, Torquay United’s stay in Non-League’s top flight came to a gut-wrenching close.

Now it’s our job to pick out the players who performed the best and honour them with a place in our Team of the Weekend.

We tap into our contacts up and down the country to make sure we select the squad of 16 who were the weekend’s big achievers.

What do you think of the team we have pieced together from Saturday’s matches?

Let us know if you reckon we’ve missed out on someone special and join the debate on twitter @TheNationalLge

Vanarama National League Team of the Weekend

Goalkeeper: Max O’Leary (Solihull Moors)
Thanks to his masterclass on the Fylde coast, only a huge final day swing can prevent the Great Escape. Solihull were superb at Mill Farm.

Defender: David Fitzpatrick (Macclesfield)
Set up the Silkmen’s all-important opener and reduced in-form Chris Zabroski to a virtual spectator.

Defender: Steve McNulty (Tranmere)
No title, but no let up for Tranmere. Defender McNulty made sure standards didn’t slip at FC Halifax Town.

Defender: Marvin Ekpiteta (Leyton Orient)
He’s just 22, but was the eldest Orient defender against Wrexham. But a clean sheet later, their 1-0 win had a lot to do with his coming-of-age performance.

Defender: Josh Hare (Maidstone United)
The Stones are safe as they eased to victory at Chester. Hare scored 15 minutes from time to made it safe.

Midfielder: Tom Bolarinwa (Sutton United)
Sutton’s win at Ebbsfleet may not have been huge in terms of the league table, but in restoring confidence it was priceless. Bolarinwa grabbed the all-important clincher.

Midfielder: Callum Evans (Macclesfield Town)
Had a crucial part to play in both goals and was a midfield class act as Macclesfield got the win they needed to get the champagne corks popping.

Midfielder: Jordan Higgs (Bromley)

Bromley score plenty of goals from midfield and Jordan Higgs has been getting in on the act. He got the comeback started.

Midfielder: Charlie Carter (Woking)
If it wasn’t for his performance at Guiseley, the Cards could be down already. They live to fight another day. Captain.

Midfielder: Anthony Jeffery (Dover Athletic)
Dover’s play-off hopes are very much alive and the former Arsenal winger made sure they are still in with a shout.

Striker: Morgan Ferrier (Boreham Wood)
He won’t be happy that all his first-half good work went unrewarded. Two goals gave Wood a great lead but back came Bromley.

Substitutes:
Scott Loach (Hartlepool)
Ben Nunn (Leyton Orient)
Moussa Diarra (Barrow)
Kwame Thomas (Solihull Moors)
James Norwood (Tranmere)
