Something For The Weekend: Vanarama National League

By Steven Coney

Easter is almost upon us and that means only one thing - a bumper weekend of Vanarama National League action!

It all kicks off on Good Friday with a full programme in the National League including a live BT Sport game from Kingfield.

Things will look a lot clearer come Monday evening and all our clubs will be hoping to start their weekends in the best possible fashion.

So which three games are the ones to really keep your eye on? Well, let’s take a look.

Dover Athletic v Tranmere Rovers

One of the standout fixtures on Friday, this is a big game for both promotion hopefuls at Crabble.

Dover, sitting in seventh, have a five point cushion over AFC Fylde in eighth but they will know any slip-ups will only invite unwanted pressure from the chasing pack. They suffered a disappointing late defeat at Eastleigh on Tuesday and Chris Kinnear will demand a reaction at home as they look to secure their play-off spot.

Tranmere got back to winning ways last Saturday live on BT Sport and with Andy Cook firing on all cylinders, they’re a difficult proposition for anybody. It’s a long trip down to the Kent coast and yet another test of their promotion credentials. Micky Mellon will still hold slight hopes of gatecrashing the title picture and for that to happen, they just need to keep on winning.

Solihull Moors v Aldershot Town

An important game at either end of the table, it’s difficult to decide which team needs the points more.

For Solihull, a draw could potentially see them escape the bottom four for the first time in what must feel like an eternity for Moors fans. Mark Yates has turned them into a well-oiled machine that are tough to break down. They’ll need all of that defensive resolve against a talented Aldershot attack. However, Moors have been very good at home under Yates and will be full of confidence.

The Shots are coming off a much-needed win over Boreham Wood and a victory at Solihull could take them up to third. Gary Waddock’s men haven’t been as steady as they would have liked over the past few weeks and they’ll need to find some consistency in the remaining weeks of the season as they look to go into the play-offs in good form.

Woking v Macclesfield Town

Another big match that is vitally important to both clubs - which is probably why BT Sport’s cameras will be there.

The Cards have won just twice in the National League since the end of November as a campaign that, at one point, had so much promise continues to fade. Now they’re just four points above the relegation zone with seven games left. They know Macclesfield will pose a big obstacle to overcome but their home form will be crucial in these last few weeks.

Macclesfield left it late to beat Gateshead on Tuesday night and reclaim top spot in the National League. They travel to Woking on Friday before hosting Chester on Easter Monday - a double-header they will be wanting six points from. The Silkmen have done so well recently but know just one slip-up could hand the title advantage to Sutton United.
