Something For The Weekend: National League South

By Sam Elliott

It’s crunch time. There are no other words for it.

The National League South has just over a week to go and the margins are wafer thin. They have been all season.

Every week the teams at the top seem to answer questions posed of them. Is this going to be the day when we learn a little bit more about the destination of the title and who is taking the play-off places?

It’s not just at that end where the nerves are settling in. Poole Town must win if they are to avoid a return to the Southern League.

Here, we run through the three games that stick out the most.

There’s no room for error whatsoever now so buckle up your seat belts ahead of the weekend’s crucial action.

Chelmsford City v Havant & Waterlooville

This game is simply huge. It’s also probably the fixture Lee Bradbury and his team wanted the least.

You just can’t disguise the fact that Chelmsford City are flying at the moment. April has so far brought about five wins and 14 goals. Rod Stringer’s side have scored 11 times in three games and only wish the season had a few more weeks left to run.

Havant’s form is hardly poor. Joint top and getting results again, but they know this is the acid test.

Dartford v Bath City

Thankfully for Havant, their big rivals are coming up against a team in just as good goalscoring form as Chelmsford!

Bath has notched 11 goals in their previous three but their play-off hopes will be over if they don’t win at Princes Park on Saturday.

With nine wins in their last ten, Dartford are the most in-form team in English senior football. Tony Burman will know how important this weekend is.

Concord Rangers v Poole Town

It’s all over for Poole Town is they fail to win at the Aspect Arena and Hungerford beat doomed Whitehawk at home.

Tom Killick’s team will end their two-year National League South stay if results go against them and the manager accepts time is fast running out.

Concord Rangers are against safe thanks to midweek results and they can now look forward to another year in the league after beating Bognor Regis on Tuesday.

National League South fixtures:
Chelmsford City v Havant
Concord R v Poole Town
Dartford v Bath City
Gloucester v East Thurrock
Hemel H v Eastbourne
Hungerford v Whitehawk
Oxford City v Bognor R
St Albans City v Hampton & RB
Truro City v Braintree T
Wealdstone v Chippenham
Welling United v Weston
