Saturday Showtime Nearly Here As Big Weekend Arrives

By Sam Elliott

We may not have had a repeat of the breathless title race we witnessed last season.

But the fact that most of the weekend’s Vanarama National League matches have something important riding on them tells its own story.

If Chesterfield win against Oldham Athletic in the early kick-off on Saturday and Barnet fail to win at Woking, then Paul Cook’s team will be crowned champions. They will get another chance at FC Halifax Town on Wednesday.

With the fixtures getting fewer and fewer, we may know the identity of the sides in poll position for the play-offs before too long.

Aldershot’s form is outstanding while York City’s couldn’t be worse - it’s dare not lose for the ailing Minstermen, who appeared almost consigned to their fate on Tuesday night.

They were obliterated at Altrincham, who have tucked themselves nicely back into the top seven. It’s Boreham Wood next and they’ve got their own issues at the wrong end.

It was only a matter of days ago that Dorking Wanderers were playing Chesterfield off the park. They really need to summon something and beat Solihull Moors after three painful defeats.

Kidderminster have been told to simply stay in the race to avoid relegation and Phil Brown’s side will do well to return from Bromley with something to show for their trip.

Ebbsfleet United got a wake up call at Aldershot in midweek but can ease any nerves by winning at home to a Gateshead side sitting in sixth.

Everyone’s wondering about Wealdstone who have games in hand but still sit dangerously dangling over the drop zone. An AFC Fylde win at Mill Farm should see the Coasters on the way to safety.

Maidenhead United also have work to do, they’re at home to Dagenham, while Southend United go to Hartlepool United with both sides looking for a top half finish.

Eastleigh host Rochdale and on Sunday there’s a live TNT Sports game as FC Halifax Town hope their play-off hunt isn’t hindered by Saturday’s results. They are at Oxford City and you can read a match preview here.
