Preview: The FA Trophy Takes Centre Stage On Saturday

By Sam Elliott

The days are of course counting down until our National League brave-hearts try to stick it to the big boys in the FA Cup.

But first, they must try to avoid becoming the story themselves - the FA Trophy takes centre stage this weekend.

There are plenty of tasty ties as clubs take a break from league duty to get on the road to Wembley.

One side looking to avoid being in the headlines for all the wrong reasons is Torquay United.

The National League leaders are at Southern League South side are there to be shot at as they visit Chesham United - who won at fancied Weston in the last round.

There is a brilliant tie in prospect just down the road as Sutton United sense danger at St Albans City.

The Saints currently sit top of the National League South and have improved massively since last season’s struggle.

Neal Ardley has challenged those Notts County players on the periphery to stand up and be counted on Saturday.

The Magpies manager will make changes in the tricky away game against Morpeth Town and Ardley said: “This is a big chance for some to say they have to be in this team every week.”

Fresh from scoring ten goals against Coleshill Town on Tuesday night, AFC Telford head to Darlington.

The current FA Trophy holders, of course, are AFC Fylde. They face Boston United while Welwyn Garden City fancy Aldershot Town’s scalp.

There are a number of all-National League ties with FC Halifax Town taking on Hartlepool United.

Wealdstone welcome Eastleigh, while Weymouth go head-to-head with Maidenhead United.

Dover hope to get their season rolling with a win at Woking, who of course have a great history in the competition.

The 2018 FA Trophy winners Brackley Town head to in-form Chesterfield as they look for another incredible Wembley run.

There are some outstanding second round ties to be played as well.

Concord Rangers are still waiting to contest the 2020 final.

But they welcome Truro City, while Maidstone United host Poole Town and Hemel Hempstead lock horns with Corinthian-Casuals.

*Winners of the third round games will earn £4,500 from the prize pot, with the losing sides banking a cheque for £1,250.
