Poor Preparation Led To Chorley's Surprise Defeat

Chorley boss Matt Jansen says his side didn’t prepare properly for their FA Trophy tie against Marine - and were duly punished.

The Magpies, a league above their Northern Premier opponents, made a fantastic start as Matty Hughes gave them the lead in the second minute.

But it was downhill from then on. Marine equalised before the break and added two more following Josh Wilson’s red card on the hour mark.

Jansen says he was looking forward to a lengthy Trophy run but felt his side took Marine lightly.

“I didn’t just want to win today, I wanted to win the competition,” he told the club’s website. “York City won it last year and we destroyed them earlier this season.

“I told the lads we had a chance of winning this competition. Marine had won their last three and I said we couldn’t take them lightly.

“The sending off killed us a little bit. It gave them a shot in the arm and they’ve got the goal ahead.

“Whether it’s Salford, Fylde, Fleetwood, Marine or a team four or five levels below us in the Lancashire Trophy, you have to prepare for every single game the same way.

“For me, we didn’t prepare for this game the same way we have for previous ones. Maybe we took it for granted a little and when you do that, you’re susceptible.”
