Aldershot Town fans were forced to say goodbye to some favourites they fell in love with last season, but Tommy Widdrington’s task was always about discovering the next Josh Stokes and Lorent Tolaj.
OK, veteran midfielder James Henry knows he isn’t exactly one for the future but the 35-year-old midfielder has shown all his experience since arriving in the summer - and his eye for goal, too.
A rollercoaster month for the Shots saw Henry swirl in the middle of the whirlwind. Despite only completing one full game in August, he topped the scoring charts at the end of the month with five goals and had an assist to his name as well.
He explained that this is the first time in his near 20 year career that he has landed the Player Of The Month award - and added that he was once down to a shortlist after scoring six goals but got beaten by Ivan Toney… who hit nine!
While the headlines were all about the return of Kurt Willoughby to Chester in the summer, one man already there has stolen the limelight from the returning striker.
Chester themselves took a while to get going, losing their opening two games before ending the month four without defeat.
Charlie Caton was central to the response. He chipped in with vital goals against Radcliffe, Scarborough and Peterborough Sports with a deadly double against Alfreton Town sandwiched in between.
Tonbridge Angels have enjoyed a fantastic start to the new campaign and ended the month unbeaten in six.
Sean Shields was the catalyst behind their highly encouraging opening and the attacking midfielder shone. Without his goal contributions, the Angels would have been eight points worse off in August and would be hovering around the bottom four!
Winning goals against Farnborough, Salisbury and Weymouth got his season off to a flier, and he grabbed an important equaliser against Aveley.
He set up two against the Terras too and manager Jay Saunders thinks he is only just getting going!
