Not Pretty Is Just Perfect For Dagger Strevens Right Now

Ben Strevens is happy for things to get a little ugly if it means Dagenham & Redbridge keep on winning.

It’s not been a season to remember so far for the East Londoners, who have spent most of it plotting a route away from the bottom four.

To make matters worse, they won’t be taking part in the FA Cup next weekend after they were humbled by Bracknell Town, instead travelling to Dorking Wanderers for Saturday’s only National League fixture.

After getting back on track against Woking, fears returned in midweek after a error-ridden 3-1 home defeat to Boreham Wood.

But they recovered from that set-back by taking three points from one of the other sides also looking over their shoulders.

Charley Kendall’s late winner at Ebbsfleet United wasn’t a work of art but it doesn’t have to be pretty to be perfect. Strevens was thrilled to see his team dig deep and make the short trip home with maximum reward.

He said: “I think we deserved it, we’ve managed to recover from a really bad performance in midweek to get a great win on the road.

“When you’re not winning, it’s about grinding out the results however you get them. We did that and it’s an important three points. No away game is ever easy.

“We battled. That’s what this league is about. We were at our prettiest? Absolutely not, but sometimes it’s about sticking by what you’re doing and keeping the belief. We’ve now won two of our last three games by grinding out a result.”
