National League South: Complete Weekend Preview

By Sam Elliott

Hold on to your hats, the final day of the National League South season promises to be something rather special.

You may have noticed, we’ve got a rarely-seen-before six-team promotion shoot-out to close the regular season. Half a dozen teams can win it - and just to add to the drama, the leaders take on a club which appears likely to need to win to stay up.

One of the tightest and most competitive title races is coming to an end - but it could, incredibly, potentially pass off quite smoothly.

That’s because If Truro City stick to their end of the bargain and win well at home to St Albans City, they could render the chasing pack totally helpless.

But John Askey and his table toppers also know a narrow win may not be enough. That’s because Torquay United are level on points with Truro and just two goals behind on their goal difference. A win against Hemel Hempstead Town is needed, along with a high scoreline.

Eastbourne Borough are just one point behind the top two and whatever happens, they need to win against Weston-super-Mare and hope both the top two don’t.

Worthing are also just one point behind the leading pack, but need even more to go their way. The Rebels head to an uneasy Enfield Town hoping the top three all fail to win.

Whilst it's still mathematically possible for Boreham Wood and Dorking Wanderers to be crowned champions this weekend, they trail the top by three points - and are in need of a final day miracle.

Wood have an away trip to Tonbridge Angels, while Dorking welcome Chesham United.

The final play-off place will be Maidstone United’s for sure baring something unheard of. A 16-goal swing will need to be reversed if Weston are to boot them out. The Stones need just a point at free-scoring Farnborough to rubber stamp things.

As for relegation, there’s only one unanswered question.St Albans City - the side in the final place - have a mega task travelling to top of the league Truro City, and they won’t be thrilled to hear Salisbury, level on points with the Saints, meet already-relegated Welling United.

Enfield can also be dragged into the mix and will go down if both St Albans and Salisbury win and they are defeated at home to title-chasing Worthing.

What an incredible final day it is going to be!
