Morais Sold to Saints

By Steve Whitney

Vanarama National League club Boreham Wood have confirmed that....

....popular young striker Junior Morias has, as reported last month, turned down terms of re-engagement and has subsequently agreed to join National League South neighbours St Albans City for an undisclosed fee.

Although only playing eighty-eight games spread over a two-and-a-half-year period, Morais` all action style, his 24 goals and his never-say-die attitude, made him a firm favourite with the chairman, manager and everyone connected with the club.

None who were there will ever forget his extra-time winner against Whitehawk in the 21014/15 play-off final and of course the incredible celebrations!

Chairman Danny Hunter said: “It’s always a sad day for a small club like ours, when a player like Junior decides to leave us. I do understand his lack of game time last season was frustrating for him but always felt he just needed a little more patience with himself, as he adapted to life in the National League.

“That said I’ve learnt over the years that players for whatever reason do move on. That teams do evolve and that’s the reality I suppose of the industry that we are in and the supporters understand that. On a personal note I genuinely hope everything works out for Junior as he’s such a likeable character. At just 21 for him to decide to drop down a division after working so hard to get us there, is I believe a massive gamble.

“Junior`s personality will mean he just wants to play and the St Albans fans will love him. I do hope this is a stepping stone to better things for him but I have serious doubts. My experience for what it’s worth, tells me that the grass is very rarely greener on the other side and no disrespect to his agent, Ian Allinson or St Albans City, who all conducted themselves brilliantly. I just think that Junior`s lack of patience could be a massive mistake for him as a very promising young player.

“Our supporters may not be happy with me but as chairman, once Junior or any player for that matter decides to turn down a re-engagement offer, selling really is the only logical outcome for the betterment of the football club.

“Tribunals are costly and in the main a waste of everyone’s time. So once a player rejects our offer. It simply becomes a number crunching exercise to get the very best deal for Boreham Wood Football Club.

“I’m more than happy that myself and Luke have achieved a fair compensation fee and add-ons for Junior and Luke can now use every penny of that to try and improve us in the forward areas”.

The former Wycombe Wanderers youngster has put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal with the Saints.

The arrival of Morias couldn’t have been possible without the vital contribution of a ‘Boost the Budget’ donation.

The scheme was devised by ‘Stand By Your Saints’ in order to help make extra funds available for the manager throughout the season.
