Maher: We Have Something Special At Southend United

Kevin Maher feels one thing could help Southend United stand out from the play-off crowd - character.

The Shrimpers' proud manager couldn’t hide his delight as the club came from 3-1 down to win 4-3 at Rochdale in last night’s play-off Eliminator.

Charley Kendall's extra-time header propelled Southend into the semi-finals and next stop for their supporters is Forest Green Rovers on Wednesday night.

Maher, who marks a big moment tonight with his testimonial at Roots Hall, showed his players, those fans who travelled and the supporters back in Essex after a wonderful night.

He says all they have been through binds them together.

“Everyone around us in the last two or three years knows there’s never been a question about our character,” he said.

“The club probably wouldn’t have survived if it wasn’t for the character of the players and staff. It shouldn’t be a surprise, but when you see it again and again, it’s a pleasure to watch.

“For the fans to travel so far on a Thursday night is a testament to them. They follow the club everywhere as they have done all season and when it was close to going under.

“They stuck with it and deserve nights like this.”
