Macauley Fires Macc A Warning Ahead Of Live BT Sport Clash

Macauley Bonne has fired Macclesfield Town a timely title warning, saying: I’m coming to rain on your parade!

The Silkmen could be crowned Vanarama National League champions this weekend if they beat Leyton Orient and and Tranmere fail to defeat Aldershot Town.

The Silkmen can do their bit live on BT Sport on Saturday lunchtime and a carnival atmosphere is expected at Moss Rose.

Orient stand in their way - and of course one of the division’s most feared marksmen.

Bonne now has 20 for the season and the 22-year-old told us that they are looking to turn a celebration into a damp squib.

“I’ve got to be honest, I’ve got to tell Macclesfield that we’re coming up there to totally spoilt their party on Saturday,” he said.

“The season’s not done yet and we’ve still got a job to do. I don’t care if it sounds arrogant but I’m coming up to score some more goals and put the champagne on ice for them.

“I’m sure they will win it eventually, but we’re not planning on being the ones they win it against. They’ve had a great season, no doubt about it. Macclesfield have been the most consistent side by some way, they’ve been very good and when they do lift the trophy it will be deserved.

“But hopefully they will have to wait that little bit longer and we can spoilt their day.”

Not just party pooping, but it’s preparation too for Leyton Orient.

“This season is very much still on but I’ll be totally honest here, I’m already looking forward to next season,” Bonne said.

“Since the manager (Justin Edinburgh) arrived, things have changed. There’s a different mentality. He’s been fantastic to work with.

“It’s not just how he’s helped the players perform better, but it’s also about how he has helped the players who weren’t in the side and brought them out of their shells.

“We beat Barrow 4-1 in our last game, I scored twice and I was really happy with how we performed. Our form is good, we’ve won our last three and we’re building.”

He’s building as well and with the Golden Boot race considered to only be between Andy Cook and Danny Rowe, maybe four-behind Bonne can’t quite be discounted.

“I’ve scored 20 goals now, and I would love to sign off with 25. I back myself, there’s not much football left but that would be great on a personal level,” he said. “If I get that extra five, you don’t know - I may still catch those two!

“I set a 20-goal target in the summer. It was a big ask because last season I was a bench boy at Colchester, so to score so many is beyond what I could have hoped for really.

“Now I want to end the season by scoring as many as I can so I’m in the right frame of mind for August.”
