Lincoln Hit Newcomers For Six!

By Steve Whitney

Lincoln City, Gateshead, Boreham Wood and Tranmere Rovers all made it back-to-back wins in the Vanarama National League on Tuesday night.

Danny Cowley`s fancied Lincoln side head the fledgling table after hammering FA Trophy holders and newly-promoted North Ferriby United 6-1at Sincil Bank.

The Imps surged into a 3-0 lead after just 16 minutes thanks to goals from Matt Rhead after 2 minutes, Nathan Arnold 3 minutes later and then Luke Waterfall.

The on 23 minutes, Jonathon Margetts was fouled in the box by Ben Middleton, who was shown a straight a red card, and Rhead scored the resulting penalty.

Curtis Bateson pulled a goal back for the visitors 5 minutes later to make the half-time score 4-1.

But Margetts after 51 minutes and Bradley Wood on 66 minutes added further woes to ten-man Ferriby.

Tranmere have also been tipped to do well this season by the pundits and they beat Barrow AFC 2-0 at Prenton Park.

After an opening half-hour of few chances, Barrow`s Jordan Willams had an effort deflected behind by veteran defender Steve McNulty and at the other end, James Norwood missed a golden chance when clean through.

But it was a former Bluebird who broke the deadlock for Rovers 5 minutes before the break when he headed a Steve Jennings corner past Joel Dixon.

And the game was all over as a contest 2 minutes from time when Dixon came off his line and brought down Norwood, who stepped up and fired home the penalty for 2-0.

Boreham Wood produced arguably the result of the night in winning 4-1 at Crabble, despite Dover Athletic being down to ten-men for almost the entire second half.

Ricky Miller fired Dover in front from the spot after 21 minutes.

But the game turned 4 minutes into the second half when Miller was dismissed following a second yellow card after a challenge on Wood`s former Woking defender Mark Ricketts.

The visitors eventually equalised after 62 minutes when Jack Parkinson conceded a penalty which Kenny Davis beat Dover`s debutant `keeper Steve Arnold from the spot.

Wood then took the game away from the hosts with two goals in 2 minutes shortly afterwards.

Bruno Andrade fired home from close-range to make it 2-1, and then Angelo Balanta, who was ironically on trial with Dover in pre-season before going to Wood, made it 3-1.

Andrade made it 4-1 in the 77th minute with a deflected free-kick that wrong-footed former Forest Green Rovers `keeper Arnold.

Gateshead also made it 100% start from their two matches with a good 3-0 win at the Merseyrail Community Stadium.

The home side were beaten at Dagenham & Redbridge last weekend, and fell behind right on the stroke of half-time when Danny Johnson put the Tynesiders in front.

That looked as though it was going to be enough for Neil Aspin`s side, until the 87th minute when Wes York took advantage of a half-stop by Port `keeper Tyrell Belford and then sub Mitch Brundle added a third in the 3rd minute of stoppage time.

New boys Solihull Moors along with Eastleigh, Wrexham, relegated York City and Braintree Town are all yet to taste defeat in 2016/17.

Moors followed up last Saturday`s win with a comeback draw at the Autotech Stadium against Woking.

The visiting Cards took a 31st minute lead with a Nathan Ralph header.

And then 4 minutes after half-time, it got better for Garry Hill`s side as a cross-cum-shot from Zak Ansah deceived home keeper Danny Lewis and went in.

But sub Harry White reduced the arrears in the 73rd minute and then it was his shot that rebounded to Jordan Fagbola to equalise with 10 minutes remaining.

Fancied Eastleigh and new-look Braintree also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Amlin Stadium.

After a goalless first half that the visitors edged, with Iron keeper Jamie Butler twice having to keep his side in the game with good saves from Mikael Mandron.

And it came as little surprise when it was Eastleigh who broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with an own goal from Ian Gayle, although striker James Constable was trying to claim it.

Six minutes later though, Braintree were back on level terms when former Crawley Town striker Lee Barnard sent a 25-yard effort past Ross Flitney.

Wrexham, who drew on the opening day, condemned Guiseley AFC to a second successive defeat at Nethermoor.

But Gary Mills` side left it very late.

Veteran Michael Rankine gave the home side a 12th minute lead from a free-kick, only for John Rooney to level from the spot 13 minutes later.

Gerry McDonagh headed Wrexham in front in the 65th minute, but Jake Lawler looked to have earned the Lions a point when he equalised with just 7 minutes to go.

However, in the 3rd minute of time added on, Paul Rutherford popped up with Wrexham`s winner.

York followed up last Saturday`s draw with a hard-fought 1-0 Bootham Crescent win against a Macclesfield Town side who had won their first game.

Danny Rowe came closest to breaking the deadlock when he saw his 20-yard drive saved by Minstermen keeper Scott Flinders.

Twelve minutes into the second half saw the home side go in front in rather fortunate circumstances when a Macc clearance struck Matt Fry and looped over keeper Craig Ross.

Flinders did well to deny Jack Mackreth late on, but York held firm for their first win.

A goal 2 minutes from time saw Aldershot Town win 1-0 at the EBB Stadium against newcomers Maidstone United

Stones looked like earning a draw until substitute Bernard Mensah pounced on a mistake and buried a low effort past Stones `keeper Lee Worgan.

Torquay United also have their first win on the board with a similar outcome at Plainmoor against a still point-less Bromley.

The only goal of the game came when Ben Gerring broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when he ran onto Aman Verma`s corner and powered the ball into the back of the net.

Chester FC are another side to have recorded their first three-point haul on Tuesday night – and in emphatic fashion after beating much-fancied Dagenham & Redbridge 3-0 at the Deva Stadium.

The Blues took a 12th minute lead with a terrific volley from 25 yards from Elliott Durrell.

Twelve minutes after that Chester doubled their lead through Tom Shaw.

It got worse for John Still`s side 9 minutes into the second half when veteran Luke Guttridge was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

And just 5 minutes later, James Alabi headed home a Johnny Hunt cross to make it game over.

Last season`s runners-up Forest Green Rovers have made a slow start to the new campaign and had to make do with just one point at the New Lawn against newly-promoted Sutton United, for whom this was also a first point.

Star signing Matty Tubbs was on the bench on the opening day, but started this game and took just 7 minutes to open his account when he headed home a Mo Chemlal free-kick.

But the U`s stunned Mark Cooper`s side with an equaliser 10 minutes into the second half from the spot after Drissa Traore had brought down Bedsente Gomis – Nick Bailey converted past Sam Russell.
