Lewer Loves His New Look Southport But Needs A Repeat Later

Thrilled Alan Lewer described his superb Southport players as "exceptional" - but requires them to be just as good this evening.

The new manager has had to work hard to get a squad together capable of returning to the Vanarama National League at the first attempt.

Southport begun their North campaign by blowing away Boston United 4-0.

They were "brilliant" according to Lewer, who is taking the team alongside former England defender Mark Wright this season.

But the games come thick and fast. This evening, the Sandgrounders go to Bradford Park Avenue.

Lewer said it couldn't have gone any better on day one.

He said: "We were great, full credit to the players. They were exceptional.

"To a man they were outstanding. That was the perfect performance for the first day of the season.

"Now they have set the standard," he added. "We have got to carry this forward as we have two tough away games now."

Lewer concluded: "This season is going to be about workrate and application. They showed that in abundance.

"But it's no good just doing it on the first day of the season, of course.

"We will need that kind of attitude every game and we will need to be just as good on Monday night that's for sure. But what a start, full credit to the team as it's due."
