Johnson Wants Gulls To Impress On His Big Huish Park Return

After accusing his players of not being men, Gary Johnson wants them to mature quickly as he plans for an emotional return to Yeovil on Boxing Day.

The Gulls fell to a sixth straight defeat after last weekend's "embarrassing" loss to Chesterfield ahead of their Boxing Day trip to Huish Park.

Only Chesterfield and bottom side Ebbsfleet have conceded more goals this season than Torquay and Johnson didn't hold back in his assessment of their recent barren spell.

"Seven or eight defeats is embarrassing for a club like ours and for me," he told Devon Live.

"At the moment we are not looking good enough for this level over a period of time - we are not scoring enough goals, and we certainly didn't create too many chances today, and we have been very poor in our own penalty box.

"At the moment we don't look like men. Other teams fighting for their lives are doing better than us. There is a lot of work to be done and a lot to be sorted out."

The 64-year-old had two spells at the Glovers - winning an FA Trophy and two promotions in his first time there before a return in 2012 saw him lead them to the Championship for the first time in their history.

And while a place in his heart will always be reserved for Yeovil Town, Johnson wants his current employers to spark a revival heading into the New Year.

"I had two spells with great success at Yeovil," he said. "I've always looked forward to going back there and I feel as if I know most of the crowd personally.

"But that was then and this is now, and I want to go there with a team that's worthy of representing Torquay United.

"Looking at the replay of the Chesterfield match again, other than our very poor defending of their goals," he added. "We played some good stuff - we've just got to get it right at both ends."
