The Seals are one game away from the National League after overcoming “never seen before” levels of adversity at Kidderminster Harriers on Sunday.
The scenes at the full-time whistle left the manager convinced that togetherness can lead to achievement.
Chester visit Scunthorpe United next week and he says it’s a fitting - and correct - Promotion Final.
“This year has been tough at times, hasn’t it?” he said after the 2-1 win, secured by Declan Weeks against his old club.
“It’s been tough. It’s easy for me to say, but as times I don’t think some of it has been fair.
“I think you deserve a bit of criticism when your team doesn’t play well but it was becoming a bit of a pantomime at times.
“But the supporters were fantastic. It felt like a home game, it was ridiculous. The atmosphere and the backing for the players, it’s what it is all about. If you’re going to manage this club, or play for this club, you’ve got to understand what it means.”
He says Chester’s form since January is something to be proud of - as is his players’ mental strength to overcome numerous set-backs days after an exhausting Eliminator.
“I think it’s the right final, it’s the right two clubs and we know what’s going to be expected,” he said.
“When Kidderminster went ahead it was a test for the players. What are you going to deliver? It’s just more adversity but they dealt with it incredibly well.
“What this group have done since January, the amount of points they’ve put on, they’ve given the club a chance to compete for promotion.
“Scunthorpe are such a strong side, we’ve got a lot of respect for them as a club. It’s going to be a great final in two weeks’ time.”
