It's A Wearne And Widdrington Show As Awards Are Dished Out!

By Sam Elliott

November is the month when so much happens - the National League really starts to take shape and the FA Cup creates heroes.

So it made our panel’s Manager and Player awards even tougher!

We’re certainly starting to find out why King’s Lynn Town was so upset to see Tommy Widdrington leave for Aldershot Town.

He’s turned them from struggling Shots to play-off sharp-shooters and reputation is counting for nothing.

Getting the month underway with an incredible 7-4 win over League Two Swindon Town in the FA Cup, they led the game 7-0 little over an hour in - and it left plenty of people spitting their tea out as they checked the scores!

They’ve been making huge strides in the National League too. Backed their slaughtering of Swindon up with league wins over Kidderminster Harriers, Bromley and FC Halifax Town.

In fact, the club have already equalled their points total for home games this season compared to last season. Widdrington wants more. His young team are coming of age and there hasn’t been this level of excitement in the Hampshire town for years.

When Mike Williamson decided the time was right to leave Gateshead, it threatened to derail their season.

A 4-0 defeat to Fylde followed as they were then quickly dumped out of the FA Cup. Stephen Wearne wasn’t about to let a campaign full of promise spiral out of control and things picked up.

Wearne became someone interim boss Rob Elliott could rely on, the attacker scoring five goals in four games.

Without his goals the Heed would be five points worse off in November. Instead, they finished the month in the play-off places and don’t see why they won’t stay there.

He scored twice against Barnet, and also notching against Dorking Wanderers, Solihull Moors and Southend United.

We all know what became of the last Gateshead striker to hit the net with such regularity!
