How All Our Sides Measured Up In The FA Cup This Weekend

By Sam Elliott

Life's not like we’re used to at the moment, but one thing remains the same - the FA Cup’s ability to pull off a surprise or two.

The National League sides entered the fray this afternoon and a number went out as the old competition didn’t lack in its old magic.

Chesterfield were a few minutes from bowing out to league leaders Stockport County but concern turned to joy within minutes.

Milan Butterfield drew the Spireites level with time running out but John Pemberton’s team took the tie 7-6 on penalties.

Bragging rights as well as a place in the first round went to Woking as rivals Aldershot came up short.

Max Kretzschmar finished one-on-one against Mitch Walker to secure a famous win for the Cards against their old foes.

“We didn't look anything like we have done in the last two games,” accepted Shots manager Danny Searle.

There were some shocks too for our sides.

A helter-skelter tie saw Maidenhead United surrender a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at home to Cray Valley Paper Mills.

South Shield were too strong for FC Halifax as they took took the Shaymen’s scalp with a 2-0 win in the north east.

Marine won at Chester, Oxford City stunned Weymouth, while National League North Guiseley went down 2-1 at FC United of Manchester.

Wealdstone are rampant in the National League right now - but Hayes & Yeading refused to read the script.

But there was some better news elsewhere, and our clubs will be well represented on Monday.

Hartlepool had no problem at Ilkeston and plucked the Robins’ feathers out with a 6-0 win.

Goals from birthday boy David Parkhouse, Luke Molyneux, Joe Grey, Tom Crawford, Mason Bloomfield and Gavan Holohan saw Pools secure their place in Monday’s draw.

Solihull Moors, pictured, are on the march - they walloped Wrexham 4-0 thanks in no small part to a classy Joe Sbarra double.

Barnet avoided a real scare at Leiston - and missing manager Peter Beadle will be delighted with their comeback win.

Darren Sarll called Yeovil’s penalty win over Dover Athletic after the game ended 3-3 “madness - absolute madness.”

Michael Cheek’s winner was enough for Bromley to knock Sutton United out.

Brackley Town made light work of Marske - Lee Ndlovu and Tre Mitford both scored twice in a 5-1 win.

Tonbridge Angels took their place in the first round for the first time since 1972 in style - they thrashed Taunton Town 5-0.

Concord Rangers are in the hat as well but they were pushed all the way by Chippenham Town.

Danny Green in the final minute took the there and Danny Scopes’ team will be hoping for a big club when the balls come out.

Darlington made light work of Cambridge City, their 2-0 win was secured in the first half, Luke Chapman made it safe.

Paul Doswell loves the FA Cup - his Havant & Waterlooville will be feared in the first round after they won 3-0 at Bath City.

Hampton won 1-0 at Hemel Hempstead, while Torquay United were too strong for Sholing.

Boreham Wood avoided an upset against Wimborne with a 2-0 win, while Dagenham may not have impressed by beating Hartley Wintney 1-0 but they at least got the job done.

Eastbourne are through - James Hammond’s goal was enough to see off Dulwich, while Eastleigh were “professional” in their 3-1 win over Weston-super-Mare, said manager Ben Strevens.

Where next?

Jim Thinks Fylde Will Be Fighting Fit As He Prepares For Vital Op Jim Bentley believes five-from-five AFC Fylde will only get stronger now - even though the manager won’t be around to see it.
What Happened On Saturday Across The National League? Ten-man Ebbsfleet United came from behind twice to deny Hungerford Town the chance to move top of Vanarama National League South.
