Heed Hoping For Continued Improvement

By David Richardson

Neil Aspin believes his Gateshead side have been improving each week since a disappointing opening day defeat at Woking.

The Heed were narrowly beaten 1-0 at home on Saturday by Aldershot Town - watch match highlights here.

Gateshead sit fourteenth on 15 points but remaining in touching distance of a tight top half.

In the most unpredictable National League season for a long time, a string of wins can boost teams right to the top although for now, Aspin is satisfied with his improving team.

"We're in mid-table at the moment - our results indicate that having won as many as we've lost - but I think the performances have been suitably encouraging," he said.

"There are things that we can do better but there's a platform there to build on. From the first day of the season when I thought we were poor at Woking, we have improved and we need to keep on doing that throughout the season."

On Saturday's defeat, he added: "I thought we would get the break through, I couldn't see them scoring. It's disappointing but that's football. There's not a lot of differences between teams in this league and invariably it comes to mistakes - we made a mistake for the goal.

"The players are trying their best and working hard."
