Halifax Have What It Takes To Apply The Perfect Finish

Charlie Cooper wasn’t actually around to see all the late summer drama unfold.

But he thinks it would be just like FC Halifax Town to end a season they started in disarray with an equally explosive finish.

Manager Jamie Fullarton left west Yorkshire in the middle of July, with new man Pete Wild only given the job just over a week before the start of the season.

That upheaval came after the club had various pre-season matches postponed because of issues with their Shay pitch.

Winning five of their first seven National League matches, they put anyone tipping them to struggle firmly in their place.

They eventually achieved their play-off place just like their manager knew they would and Cooper will come in handy on Friday night.

He goes up against his old club as Halifax head to Boreham Wood, kicking off the play-offs with their Eliminator clash in Hertfordshire.

Cooper, 22, told us: “I joined in the middle of September, so I missed all the excitement just before the start of the season.

“I’ve heard all about it, and it couldn’t have been easy but what a season the club has had all things considered.

“I played at Boreham Wood for a while last season and they’ve come on again this year, we know what a difficult game this is going to be.

“We’ve been working really hard and we’ve got a great focus. Not many people would have had Halifax down to win promotion after what happened but we see no reason why we can’t make it a really great season.”

Cooper isn’t just useful because of his knowledge of Friday’s opponents, a game being shown live on BT Sport.

He went up via the National League play-offs with Forest Green Rovers in 2017.

Not only that, he did it under his dad Mark - keeping it in the family, even if that is something others would perhaps rather swerve.

“I get why some aren’t keen to play for their fathers,” he added. “If things aren’t going well there you are the main culprit.

“It could become uncomfortable and really quickly, especially if you have joined and the results weren’t there.

“It wasn’t too difficult to say yes, it was an easy decision for me to sign. Hopefully I can repeat the trick and add a second National League promotion to my CV.”

Friday's live coverage of Boreham Wood vs FC Halifax Town on BT Sport gets underway from 6:45pm.
