Four Talking Points From Vanarama National League Matchday One

By Tom Scott

What were the main talking points in the Vanarama National League on Matchday 1?

The season kicked off in style on Saturday, Abbie Glover has a look at some of the standout talking points.

Southend Shock Oldham Athletic

Southend United tucked four in the net after their meeting with Oldham Athletic.

Callum Powell put the Shrimpers in front just before the ten-minute mark. Oldham hindered their potential comeback when a Will Sutton’s red card early in the second half reduced the Latics to ten men.

A more significant turning point came from the Southend dugout. Callum Powell made way for Dan Mooney – he would make the substitution worthwhile.

The clock hit 80 minutes and it appeared that the game had only just begun for Southend as Oli Coker, the 20-year-old who had only entered the pitch three minutes before, doubled their lead. Dan Mooney followed four minutes later, making it three for the home side, before Harry Cardwell sealed the game off with a fourth in the 96th minute.

Seven Goal Thriller At Chesterfield

Chesterfield finished last season in the National League Promotion Final, however, the side just missed out on promotion when Notts County won on penalties.

The Spireites managed a last-minute win against Dorking Wanderers where the match saw a total of seven goals.

Ryan Colclough opened the match with a goal for Chesterfield. Jason Prior equalised for Dorking Wanderers following it up with another goal after they were awarded a penalty, putting the away side in the lead.

The lead didn’t last long before Liam Mandeville put Chesterfield level again - securing a brace twenty minutes later - making it three for Chesterfield.

Seb Bowerman thought he had salvaged a point for Dorking when he scored in added time, however, Joe Quigley netted a last-minute winner for Chesterfield.

Warrington Town Net Four

The town enjoyed opening day with a comfortable win.

Southport managed to get the back in the back of the net in the first half, but Tyler Walton’s goal was ruled out due to it being offside.

Sean Williams scored the first in the last minutes of the first half putting them in the lead. Despite having chances and dominating a large part of the first half, Southport did not have anything to show for it.

Some argued that Warrington goalkeeper Tony Thompson should have been sent off for handball, but he was shown only a yellow.

Luke Duffy doubled their lead in the second half with Bohan Dixon making it three ten minutes later. Southport were unable to make a comeback as they fell three behind.

Isaac Buckley-Ricketts signed the game off with a fourth goal for the Town. Warrington took three points home after a successful day out.

Newcomers Announce Their Arrival

Ebbsfleet United took three points home after a win away against Rochdale.

The only goal of the game came from Luke O’Neill in the 36th minute.

Oxford City did not experience the same joy after a loss away to Aldershot town.

Aldershot netted the first with Jack Barham scoring in the 13th minute. Josh Parker was not far behind and equalised for Oxford City not long after.

By the 90th minute - City were 4 behind following Aldershot making it 5. The visitors - City were 4 behind following Aldershot making it 5. The visitors made it two in added time but were still three behind and went home empty handed.
