Five Things You May Have Missed In The National League

By Steven Coney

The weather may have reared its ugly head again but the Vanarama National League largely overcame it with two days of enthralling drama.

The National League took centre stage on Good Friday whilst the North and South divisions have provided their own entertainment today.

It’s been two days of big results, big goals and big talking points up and down our three divisions.

There was plenty to keep your eye on so here are five things you may have missed around the National League…

Late is great for leaders Macclesfield Town!

The Silkmen faced a difficult trip to Woking, a side desperate for a victory themselves. With the BT Sport cameras watching, it was always going to be an interesting fixture. A goal seven minutes from time looked to have given the Cards a point but Macclesfield found a late winner - just like they had on Tuesday against Gateshead. Danny Whitehead was on hand to prod home Tyrone Marsh’s effort which had got stuck on a boggy goal-line! John Asley’s men are now six points clear.

The play-off sides are finding it difficult to gain momentum

Tranmere Rovers’ trip to Dover Athletic was beaten by the weather and their rivals all failed to pick up three points. Wrexham and Aldershot drew on the road - at Bromley and Solihull Moors respectively - whilst Boreham Wood were held at home by Barrow. AFC Fylde got back to winning ways and are now just two points adrift of Dover in seventh.

It’s as you were in the relegation scrap

Solihull Moors’ fantastic home form under Mark Yates continued with a goalless draw against Aldershot Town. Moors will feel they probably should have won, whilst Barrow also picked up a useful point at promotion hopefuls Boreham Wood. Woking and Maidstone also came unstuck and the big winners of the day were Hartlepool and Torquay. The former look to be climbing to safety whilst the latter have at least given themselves a chance.

Salford City take full advantage of their rivals’ stalemate

The Ammies picked up a 2-1 win against Manchester rivals Curzon Ashton and would have been keeping a very keen eye on the score from St James Park. It proved to be the best result for Salford as Brackley and Harrogate played out a goalless draw in Northamptonshire. It means the Ammies are now six points clear - albeit with their rivals holding games in hand - and it’s again in their hands.

Is it now a two horse race in the National League South?

Dartford have shown grit in recent weeks and they did again on Good Friday, Alfie Pavey coming up with a late, late winner against Hampton & Richmond Borough. The Beavers’ title hopes received a big blow and it looks like it may be a straight race between Havant & Waterlooville and the Darts. Both sides keep winning and Havant know one slip-up could see the advantage go back to the Kent club. It remains a title race you can’t take your eyes off!
