Cooney Becomes a Steelman

Corby Town have signed young Irish defender Tommy Cooney from Vanarama National League North rivals Boston United for the remainder of the season.

Cooney joined Boston just a couple of weeks ago from Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division North side Brighouse Town.

Cooney, 20, hails from Galway in Southern Ireland.

Moving from Bromley, Cooney is now living in Leeds with friends.

He started playing aged six for Sligo Rovers and was scouted at the age of fifteen.

Upon turning 16 a few months later he made the moved to Fulham for trials during pre-season and was signed with the Adidas Academy scholarship programme.

It was from there he went on to play for Brentford for two years before going to Millwall on trial, but injury struck with a re-occurring grade two right groin strain and he was released from the club.

He had trials with Bury and Shrewsbury, held talks with Guiseley AFC and actually signed for Scarborough Athletic but then joined Brighouse Town in December.
